Unexpected upgrade ACA help needed

Hello there!

I enjoyed this community immensely 11-12 years ago as my husband and I were selecting my engagement ring. We selected a lovely 1.8 H si2 round from Whiteflash, set in their 6 prong platinum Tiffany setting. My ring size is 5.25/5.5

I’m pretty sentimental and never figured I’d be looking at an upgrade. Unfortunately, my ring has become damaged to the point of needing a new setting and new diamond. Luckily, insurance is covering the damage and I’m working with Whiteflash again as we had a great experience with them the first time around.

I’ve gotten over the sadness of damaging my ring and now I’m ready to make some beautiful lemonade out of lemons!

My original stone was not ACA but was GIA xxx. I’m confident the ACAs will be a much better cut. I’m willing to go down in color to get a bit more size. We are also open to kicking in some additional funds for the project but don’t want to go over the top as this wasn’t an expected project.

I have this stone on hold:

I had WF do a visual on this and two other J’s and they said this was the one that stood out. I’m open to suggestions and thoughts!

Additionally, I’m planning to set it in this setting below. I’m highly tempted to go for yellow gold. I’m drawn to it and my three big jewelry purchases (all DBTY) have all been yellow gold. It seems there are mixed reviews on what yellow gold will do to a J stone. Some seem to say it helps and others say it hurts— so I’m a bit confused. There’s also an option to do yellow band with the white prongs. Decisions, decisions!

I guess I just wanted to talk this all through with a community that cares about these types of things and see if there are any thoughts or concerns. This hasn’t been something I’ve been dreaming up— so it all just feels like a lot of decisions I guess have the normal concerns— will I truly love a J, should I be going in a different direction, etc. I appreciate your help and will post with pictures when the project is complete.

How color sensitive are you? Do you have any other large stones in lower colors? I think that might be my only concern is that you are dropping
from an H to a J. I own an ACA J and it is lovely but it is a J. I do see tint in it in certain lighting.

You might ask for a picture of that J (which is nice btw) next to a large H so that you know in advance what the color difference will be. Keep in
mind in real life you wont have an H near the J so you probably wont see the color difference.

Here is an H that you could ask for a picture next to...might also ask for the side view.

I love that setting. Havent notice it before. So pretty and at a great price point. I love stones in yellow gold because it usually makes them pop.
That being said I dont have any in yellow gold:confused:.

What color is your wedding band?

Edit...Another option would be to find a place where you could see well-cut J AGS stones.

Do you have a shop locally with GIA/AGS graded stones?

If so, you could ask to look at a range of colours in a range of lighting conditions, so you can work out how colour sensitive you are and whether colour bothers you :)

Thanks! I have a 1.25ct that was an inherited stone from my grandmother. It’s ungraded and is set in a white gold bezel necklace. It’s a lot warmer than my H was but I still love it! I do understand that a necklace is different than a ring. I’ve been holding it on my finger trying to get an idea. I guess warmth doesn’t bother me but yellow does?? I’m not sure.

With a J you will more than likely see tint from the side especially with a 2c stone. Will that bother you? An ACA will face up
beautifully tho but in certain lighting may see tint. I’m not color sensitive so I would consider a J. My ER is K but with SF so I rarely see tint from the sides but in certain lighting I see some tint. Overall, doesn’t bother me. Personal preference. My studs are also K no Fluor and I do see tint from the sides but they are on my ears so no one notices that. They are ACA and face up beautifully bright. GL!

That’s a good idea. Whiteflash has my old stone— so they can see what I had and what I'm potentially moving to and my sale associate is just so confident in the change. She said she’s 100% sure I’ll love it even though I have voiced some hesitation.

I’ll check out some local Jewelry stores however I find most stones looks fabulous in those stores. I want to see it in my home, car, at, I don’t know, Costco.

I don’t think from the side it will bother me. I’m just not 100% sure of that.

I forgot to mention I also have studs—one in J and one in K. They are not aca but well (enough) cut. I this they are the whitest things ever! I seriously thought I was sent the wrong stones. I could tell a color difference between my H but they are much smaller at .75 each. I know their would be a greater difference in a larger stone.

Just saw your last question— the wedding band I’m wearing us a very thin plain yellow gold band. It was my grandmothers. I also have my own shared prong band but I’ll wear it on a different hand or usually not at all because I find it rather uncomfortable.

I love both the diamond and setting

Thanks! WF said the setting is brand new! I was going to go with a new version of the previous setting I had but that one is twice as much and I think I might like this one even more! Any hesitation with the yellow gold??

I have mixed gold on my setting so no, I think yellow gold is fine for the J diamond. My only question would be 14k or 18k, personally I like the look of 18k better but since you already have a gold band the 14k will most likely pair better.

Yes— the band is 14k. I have a necklace and bracelet that are both 18k and I was surprised at the difference in the yellow gold color. Didn’t know if that was the age of the band or the nature of 14k and 18k. I prefer the color of the band. It seems almost like a softer color vs a more rich color of the 18k. But I do adore all of them.

this is absolutely stunning! Gives me so much confidence in this setting!

Great...did you ask for a picture of your old stone with the new J? That will give you some idea on the color. I'm not color sensitive so I'm good
with my ACA J.

I love this setting @Mamajemmy...It’s delicate looking but strong. I also love the swoopy profile.

I’m so happy to hear that! Is it comfortable? WF also said there was a 3 week production time for this setting. Did it take about that time to make it for you?

your ring is breathtaking!!

That’s a good idea! I sent a long rambling email to them last night asking about the color difference between the two stones. When they respond I might ask for that.

Oh and also— did you make any alterations to the setting or directions for then the set it in terms of setting height or prong shape?

I saw that when I was considering the settings....and almost went with another one thinking it will be a temporary setting..but I liked it so decided to wait. It took a little over two weeks although it did say it would take three weeks. I’m so glad I waited.
It’s extremely comfortable..I don’t even feel that it’s on..

Nope..I was going to do a claw setting..but decided to just let it be. The prongs are petite so they just blend in with the sparkle..

This is so helpful to know! Now I just need to decide if I want to do a white metal or yellow gold!
