Uncommon Plot for Cushion Diamond - Your Opinion Pls

Hi All,

I'm in the market for a cushion diamond, swayed very much by the HW Micro Pave.

I've read alot that the modified cushions, particularly the "crushed ice versions" are regarded to be inferior to the non-modified versions with larger facets. I've seen both, and I like both. I like the near field sparkles in the crushed ice versions, and I like the bling of the antique cuts from afar. My initial love, was for the crushed ice versions, but starting to appreciate the ones with larger more defined facets, but not till the point of a hearts and arrows cushion.

Recently, I've been offered by a local jeweller the following stone, but the price was something within my budget. The stone is not in store, and I'm waiting for the jeweller to bring it in for me with a small deposit. I have not seen the stone, only the GIA cert. I noticed that the plot is quite different from regular modified cushion plots, and it seems the cheaper blue nile stones share this plot. I have not done extensive research on this, I've tried but found little information.

If you have knowledge over such a facet plot, could you share your opinion please.
And let me know, overall, your opinion if this stone could be possibly a keeper.

Hi Verna,
Welcome to PS...and congrats on being in the market for a cushion!

The part in bold: it's merely an opinion, which has been frequently stated here on PS as a fact. It's only an opinion, and not one shared by a majority of experts- or even diamond shoppers. All you need do is walk into the fanciest stores on Fifth Avenue to see some "crushed ice" stones that will knock your socks off.
SO- if you like the "crushed ice" look, my advice is follow what pleases you.

About the plot- although there is information there- it's not enough to make any sort of conclusion about how the diamond is going to look in real life.
Wait till you see it in person, then draw conclusions based on how you feel when you see it.

Thanks for your response. Has anyone else had experience with this plot? I'm gonna view the stone next week and have to decide there and then if I'm going to take it.

Be sure to look at the stone in different light, not just in the store. Make sure you see it in overcast daylight before you decide.

I must have looked at about 40+ cushions in person when shopping for a ring and I imagine over 200+ certificates/online stones... I can't recall seeing a plot exactly like this and I don't think I've seen a stone with this plot.

You'll just have to see what it looks like in person. If possible, will there be one or more other cushion cuts which you could compare it alongside?

I can see there are some "signature cut" stones on GOG which have similar but not identical plots (they are similar in that they have the four kite-shaped facets appearing at 12, 3, 6 and 9 o'clock positions, which isn't common for the underneath of a cushion): http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11054/ and http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11263/ (with these, the "X" tips touch extent the full diameter of the pavilion, whereas yours has a smaller "X").

A tip when viewing the stone - see if you can view/hold it in the shade (i.e. if viewing at a table, put it underneath the table where you knee would usually be and see what the sparkle is like). If you get fire/scintillation in that lighting, then you may be on to something.

Also remember that so called "crushed ice" isn't even a bad thing; you can get good crushed ice with lots of small white sparkle as well as the dead, watery crushed ice.

Thank you for your opinions.

I'm really hoping for the best with this unique plot. I will let u know how it looks next week.

By the way I'm being charged $7500 for this stone ... Not cheap!

Here it is !!!

So lovely - congratulations on your new ring!

Great looking ring. Congrats!

Great I love the crushed ice look and not the large facet cushions

I wouldn't define this as slushy crushed ice. The facets are more defined, but smaller than the "antique" non-modified versions. Its intriguing, because unlike "hearts and arrows", you don't actually remember how it looks so every time you look at it, it is a surprise.

More pictures, so here u go !
