Well I went into the Jeweler''s building this week to look at diamonds. I already know the type of ring, setting...I will be getting for the engagement ring I just need to buy the diamond. I went in wanting nothing less than a J in color and around 1.5 ct. I walked about putting a $1000 deposit on a K. I am having second thoughts, specifically, I am worried that when it is set in the ring I will see yellow. I am going to ask for a refund already and do what I should have done, scour this website before shopping again. I just want to get an opinion on this GIA report. Am I getting ripped off at 6k or just paranoid? I am definitely not going through with purchase but want some feedback anyways. I think this site will be my new best friend.

wmd (hmmm),

Welcome.

Though you may have reason to not want the color, and also, though many are less true believers than me, your cut is probably pretty good (.6 on the HCA, though mapping off a bit of ideal targets), and priced in the middle of comparable GIA options with similar characteristics.

Read the tutorial...even glance at my suggestions below my signature...however...with GIA certs, as you have them, now providing purported crown & pavilion angles, your local shopping preference can prove out as pretty reasonable.

If you want to continue with that jeweler do so! It seems he has reasonable prices based on what I can tell from the numbers, and you get the benefit of seeing the diamonds in person. You may get better selection online (due to larger inventory) but it seems you''ve found a quality B & M.

If you want to avoid color on the sides, I would advise I or higher, but that''s more based on individual color sensitivity.

The cut on this stone isn''t terrible, how much is the cost of the stone? If it''s too expensive, you might save money by just forgetting about the 1k loss and starting over here. If it is reasonable, you might want to consider getting a K or telling the jeweler your concerns and asking if he has any J''s or I''s with a good cut. I would check out a thread called "K stones in platinium" just to give you a feel on what the stone will look like set.

Yes, return it so that you can buy a diamond after you've been educated... this one doesn't look too bad, but the K color will be noticeable and the very thin girdle may present a durability issue.

Thanks for the advice. According to the Jeweler the deposit is refundable. So I am going to get a refund and research and then start over.

Kcoursolle; the cost is $6000.

Good Old Gold, if you haven''t seen already has amazing tutorials on the 4 cs, with a lot of real examples . I''d advise checking out their site if you haven''t already =)

The deposit is refundable...then yes, definitely take the money and start your diamond education here LOL!!

What size and type of stone in general are you looking for?

I actually think the price is really good for a diamond bigger than 1.5 carats. The color thing is a personal choice and if you are not color sensitive and your GF is okay with a little warmth to the diamond, the cut is pretty good according to the numbers. I think it is a great idea to educate yourself before buying but personally I wouldn''t write off this diamond unless the color bothers you. Did it look pretty?

I agree with Hikerchick that the price is great for the numbers as said b4. Even if you end up not going with the K, I would def. get more recs from this jeweler. Having your eyes to evaluate cannot be underestimated =)

Just out of interest, the industry believes that the average lay person can begin to detect a hint of colour at an I grade, especially from the side, according to their findings. Of course some might not but it seems to be a fairly general rule of thumb and worth mention

However an I to me looks slightly off white and not what I would call warm, but I do tend to like the warmer rocks! Best on the wallet too

A simple question? When you put the deposit on the diamond....did you like the way it looked? (going by what you have said, you paid a more than fair price for the diamond...i.e. you did not over pay). Don''t get caught up in numbers or grades. If you liked the way it looked, thats all that matters. As far as coming here to get "educated"...take it with a grain of salt. Unless you have dedicated your life to this industry, you may learn somethings, but not everything. If you have questions, find a professional that can share their knowledge with you to help you make an informed decission.
