Hi all,

I am new here but have read lots of your post and need some advice.
I was looking for a specific setting that I like and found one (setting with a centre stone) for a very good price. Unfortunately the diamond has a bad HCA score (showing possible fish eye when tilted) of 5.4. I know the warning is to stay away. However, the question is should I buy the ring for the setting alone and dump the diamond into the fish tank? Or do you think it is still an "ok" diamond?

I already have an unset AVC which I love which is a potential candidate for setting into this ring but may not have the funds to do so for awhile if I buy this ring. So I thought maybe I can tolerate this diamond for a short while.

Sorry for not describing the setting, I am afraid someone/lurker might snatch it as I can't put this on hold.

Info is below. Any advice? thanks ::)

It probably depends on how much you like the setting and whether there's an alternative that doesn't force you to buy a center stone.

If this is the only one in existence, you should buy it, but that's likely not the case. The most flexible alternative would be a custom design.

Maybe you can post a screenshot of just the ring, and get some help finding an alternative? I doubt a lurker would be able to track it down from just a picture.

Hi,

Again, it would depend if it is cheaper to get the ring copied or remade by someone or if its cheaper to buy it and swap stones. If the latter is the case then even with a badly cut RB you could probably still sell it for something or maybe its a candidate for a recut and you could then put it into a Diamonds By the Yard style bracelet or necklace.

Will you be able to set a cushion into the setting? It's likely that the head will need to be changed in order to do so and that will add additional costs as well.

I agree with the others that we may be able to find you a setting that is very similar or of course you could go the custom route. Do you have an idea of how much this setting would cost new? Perhaps you could send photos to a couple of vendors to get an idea of what a custom project would cost and compare it to the cost of this one.

It's one that would be hard to copy (hand made and hand carved). I like the idea of re-housing the RB into a necklace later :))

I can buy the setting by itself from the manufacturer but it would cost me 25% more. And I think a custom design would be way more than what the ring cost (sub $4K). Also it's a hand carved one, I don't believe anyone has replicated it to date.

That's why I am curious to see if the diamond is really that bad (I know this is subjective - my standards for diamonds might be pretty low. Think bright lights and "ooooh shiny" standards)

dont settle for a dud of a diamond...

but oh my GOSH would i love a picture! I know youre afraid of lurkers but gosh i really want to see whats got you so in love

do you at least maybe have a picture of a similar one?

I think if we could see the ring, it would help. Is your AVC the same size as the diamond in the setting? If not, I would have the ring made to fit my AVC. In fact, I would do that regardless as I don't think that diamond would be one I'd use for anything.

No, the AVC is totally different in size (0.6 ct round vs 0.7 ct cushion) and I know I would have to rebuild the head to fit the AVC - hence not being able to do so now. I was quoted $1200 + by the manufacturer to set the AVC :errrr: Is that the going rate for setting a cushion???

A bit of mystery is intriguing, no? Heh heh it's nothing that haven't been seen here before ...
