I checked the archives and this question has been posted before, but not many ever responded. There was one response with the following link. http://members.aol.com/uglinc/u.g.l.html
From that response it was noted that ebay sellers often use this lab. From that it seems probable:
1. The grading report is likely not worth the paper it's printed on
2. Your local grocery store could probably provide a better document
I don''t believe UGL is a lab (like GIA, EGL, AGS, etc). I think they are appraisers. Their website www.uglinc.com states that their staff are all GIA graduate gemologists. Some ebay vendors sell jewelry or stones with grading reports or appraisals that don''t reflect the merchandise you are actually getting. That isn''t necessarily the fault of the lab or the appraiser - (cert switching?). I would be hesitant to purchase something off of ebay based on a UGL appraisal, but I wouldn''t exactly knock someone taking their jewelery to have it appraised by UGL. They aren''t a grading lab.
I know of a pretty crooked Ebay seller who insists on using U.G.L and only U.G.L. We''ve received jewelry graded by them as well and let''s just say their appraisals were overwhelmingly generous.
My advice to anyone considering purchasing jewelry graded by UGL is keep your money, you will not be happy with what you get.
They are a division of EGL-USA. They specialize in putting large numbers on small documents that can be used as selling materials for jewelers. They are very prolific and very optimistic.
I believe that UGS (Universal Gemological Services) is the EGL-USA division.
UGL (Universal Gemological Laboratory Inc) is a different entity.
I have copies of both documents from both companies.
It is very confusing for a consumer.
