Hi,

I have been doing quite a bit of research on a Round diamond, but needed some help on the CLARITY of a round diamond. I am going to get a GIA certified round diamond in either VS2 or SI1, but I wanted to find out what types of inclusions are fine to have in a round diamond. I have been told that the inclusions listed on the GIA report are listed based on severity, so what kind of inclusions are best to have since I don''t have money to buy a IF?

I am curious on peoples'' responses regarding clarity because my bf was about to buy a VS2, but when GIA sent it back after getting re-certified a feather that was listed second on the list came back on the new certificate as a cavity.

Thanks for your help PS people!

Welcome Cyan,

Especially in a VS2, depending on what size diamond you are considering, it should be eyeclean and the inclusions small and not of real consequence. SI1 take on each individual case, a trusted vendor is very useful to be able to advise you. As to what type of inclusions are best, it depends, you want to look at each diamond as a whole, cut, carat, colour, clarity and type of inclusions of that particular diamond when choosing, so no hard and fast answers. A cavity is a polite term for hole/ opening, in VS it should be very small and not a problem, unless of course a cavity isn't ' mindclean' for you. There is a lot that can't be answered in one post and much which is subject to opinion and preference, here is a page you might find interesting. Also if you do a search with the tool top right, that will bring up info from the archives about every type of inclusion so you can read up.

Here is an excellent tutorial on clarity and inclusions which should help you also.

You are fine with a VS2 and up, provided it''s from a trusted lab, ie GIA or AGS. I have a VS2 and I can''t for the life of me find the damn inclusions (a feather and a cloud).

As Lorelei says though, you need to check each SI stone individually as some are not eyeclean as others.

I wouldn''t pay for VVS clarity, certainly not IF. It''s just overkill. You are not going to see the inclusions in the VS range, or even in many SI1, so why pay for something you can''t see.

Thanks for all the helpful info and links. I was wondering....if the diamond has carbon in it will it state it on the GIA report?
