I wanted some feedback from the experts on pscope about the price for two potential diamonds with the prices that I will be buying for my engagement ring. Here are the details:

1) ($5100) GIA, .90, F, VS2, 63.6 Depth, 59 Table, VG polish, VG symmetry, flouresence none, no cutlet

2) ($4300) GIA, .93, E, SI1, 61.8 Depth, 57 Table, girdle(Med to thick), no cutlet, Good Polish, VG symmetry, flourescense none

Thanks for your replies and guidance...

What shape are these. Did you say the price includes the setting?

Sorry--forgot that important detail.
The diamonds shapes are round and that is the price for just the diamond, not the setting

I don''t think it is a matter of being "taken", but what you will generally find is that you will pay the price of an ideal cut stone for a premium cut at the jewelry store. I have looked and that is what I see at each one. I can get an ideal cut with good color and clarity from one of the respected online jewelers for the same price. I''d personally rather have the better diamond for my money.

The premium for E color is a bit of overkill, and I personally like VS clarity, but the cut is most important as you will hear repeatedly on this forum. So go to the diamond search part of the site and put in perhaps G color (still basically colorless but a better value) and VS or whatever clarity you prefer, ideal cut, .85-.95 and see what you come up with. You can get a better buy and better quality for your money, and these vendors have easy return policies if for any reason you don''t like the diamond when you see it.

Really more info is needed to assess cut quality such as the crown and pavillion angles as well as the depth and table - these are very important. The first one is rather on the deep side and may look smaller for it's weight, you don't mention the girdle thickness on this one. The second looks better with the depth, but it has a med to thick girdle which will again hide weight there and possibly make the diamond look smaller too. Unless an E colour is very important to you, you could drop to G or H for example and still have a very white looking diamond. E's command premiums pricewise. Have you seen these diamonds? Have you looked online to see what is available? You could find a fantastic diamond for your budget which will outsparkle any others you will see if you are comfortable with this. many of us have purchased online and have had a great experience. Prices will be higher with B&M stores as they have more overheads than online vendors. Check out the tutorials at the top of the page under knowledge and I am sure you will find it very helpful. Make cut your top priority when choosing and you won't go too far wrong.

For example this diamond is from Whiteflash's Expert Selection and could be a fantastic looking diamond to give you an idea of what is available online. You would get a PS discount too if you pay by wire transfer. Plus this one is over a carat if that is important to you

i would cross out #1. too deep. the stone will look small for its size.

I agree the first stone is too deep. The second one could be nice if it''s eye clean.

Stone #1 is too deep. Stone #2 could be beautiful - but we need more information. I LOVE the one Lorelei posted for you from WF.
