Trying to fix a regret purchase (dark rubellite)

I once have this overpriced purchase of a rubellite stone when I first start collecting colour stone, that is too dark in tone and easily go extinction under low light.

Not only the stone is too dark, it also has a big window too. So I decided it might help the stone if I close the window so I send it for a recut

I appreciate the recut but the stone is still dark, so it has been sitting there for around 7 year+…

And now I finally decide to set the stone in rose gold hoping to make it looks better;(

Will update once I get the stone set

many of us have brought coloured stones that are too dark

@mellowyellowgirl Thanks! Im actually deciding between gold/ rose gold. However, Im abit worried that my local jeweller will make it overly brownish if I choose to electroplate the silver setting in gold

Can you get them to show you samples of work that they’ve done in YG?

I know what you mean though! I have had a similar problem but with rose gold. The bench was super weird about their RG. So they would make this yellowish 18K gold and then dip it in rhodium that they coloured with copper. After a while, the ring would discolour due to the copper tarnishing.
 
It's very pretty in it's own right. Looking forward to updates on how you set it.
 
Unpopular opinion, probably, but I wouldn't set it. I've spent way too much $ on settings for stones I wasn't happy with in an attempt to make me like them and it's never worked. I just end up w a set stone that I don't wear and then am annoyed I paid for the setting.
 
@mellowyellowgirl They have custom made a gold plated charm for me and it is more lean towards muddy yellow. I can request for a lighter gold color though, but am still thinking about it.

@lovedogs I am also afraid it will end that way so I only plan to set it in silver :mrgreen: . Im going to make a two way pendant ring and has the option to wear it as pendant if I really dont want to look at it

I have to tell you... at that size, I could live with a darker-than-ideal tone. I think she's gorgeous! How many carats? :kiss2:

Did you see this thread below by mrs.b? She had a too-dark sapphire and the setting was made with some (lighter blue? enamel under the stone, which makes the stone appear lighter/brighter etc.

If you put various colors underneath the rubellite, maybe you could see if it would make a difference. Yellow, red, pink, orange in paper, watercolor paint or whatever.

Another idea is to put it up for sale on Loupe Troop. Apparently, plenty of people do like it.

ETA: Even if it's too late for the above (if it's already being set), you could still try putting color on the back in some way to enhance the stone's appearance.

So as some of you might have read, I bought a 2.51 ct cushion cut blue sapphire online and when it came it was...not all that. In almost all lighting, it blacked out completely. And it had a window. And it was going to be my only sapphire ring (my DH's birth stone). And it ended up being...

Ooh sorry I missed the thread! And that sapphire doesnt look dark at all after setting!

I have just finished setting the stone as pendant ring, it seems that it does improve the look under sufficient lighting, while still looks as dark under low light lol…

Today is a sunny day so I bring my rubellite out and it looks like this now (yes im going to cut my nail). Frankly speaking I think it looks about the same before setting, but at least its easier now for me to admire it under the sun.:razz:

Pretty stone, but closing the window would not help brighten up the stone. If anything like you said, "still dark," or in some cases a recut will make a dark stone darker with a window.

Yea I read about it after sending it for recut. Anyway I have this OCD issue with window that i dislike them alot. I even risk it on a 4 ct mahenge spinel with big cracks in the middle just to close that window:roll: Im lucky that it didnt break, wont do it again though.
