One of the benefits of running for office as an outsider is that you get to blaze your own path, ignoring the roads and driving across fields and streams as you see fit.
But one of the drawbacks is you may drive into a minefield that everyone who's been doing this for a while already knew about.

On Wednesday, Donald Trump was asked by MSNBC's Chris Matthews if a woman who has a banned abortion should face criminal punishment.
His response, after Matthews pressed him on it?
"The answer is there has to be some sort of punishment."

MATTHEWS: Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no, as a principle?
TRUMP: The answer is there has to be some form of punishment.
MATTHEWS: For the woman?
TRUMP: Yes.
MATTHEWS: 10 cents, 10 years, what?
TRUMP: I don’t know. That I don’t know.

Trump was also asked if the man should be held responsible.
"Different feelings. Different people," Trump responded. "I would say no."

Seeing the explosion in that minefield off in the distance, his opponents were quick to jump on the statement.
Hillary Clinton tweeted, "Just when you thought it couldn't get worse. Horrific and telling."

Bernie Sanders called it "shameful."

Ted Cruz's rapid response director contrasted Trump's position with the mainstream pro-life position, which is that it is the person who performs the abortion that should be held liable.

He wasn't asked his opinion on the law. He was asked if someone breaking the law should be punished. Personally, I hate it when politicians don't answer questions and turn it into a way to talk about their agenda.

He was asked if people that have had illegal abortions should be punished, if it were posed towards me I would see the question as asking if people should be punished for breaking the law and not a position on bodily rights. I'm pro-choice but would also support such a position if it helps take away the dangers of illegal abortion procedures that women may face.

I think Trump is a goof but I also think the question he was asked was so loaded that he couldn't have given an answer without upsetting someone. I don't think I could have either.

Well, we have to have something to pick up the slack for all the people who won't be going to prison on drug charges. I'm thinking that incarcerating potentially 1 million women of childbearing age, per year, should make sure that (especially) for-profit prisons stay in the black. This idea would be good for the economy....

This is the problem with someone that is not fully versed on issues. He just spouts off anything that sounds good to him at the time - or that he thinks will resonate with some folks - without really understanding all of the points. I still say he makes lots of statements and promises about many things he would do but lacks a concrete plan to make these things happen. It is not as easy as it sounds to do most of what he proposes.

I'd love to know if he feels that men who pay for abortions should also be punished. After all, if you're commissioning someone to 'break the law', aren't you equally culpable?

I truly feel that way about ALL the candidates! Oh, let's give everybody a FREE college education! YAY!!!! (But not without adding trillions more to the national debt!!! ) And not to mention, there are thousands and thousands of college graduates who cannot find jobs that they are qualified for. Many are working part-time hourly jobs for which they didn't need a college degree!

To pay for this plan he will institute a tax on Wall Street speculators to the tune of 300 billion.. I"m FINE with that. Rich kids can still go to their elite colleges, it's a win win I think. Closing loopholes for the rich is a great way to raise money; they are still rich and the less rich are helped. Will it fly? probably not.

Well, they arrest and prosecute those who hire hitmen-so yeah, he better think thru his words b/c if you're asking or helping someone to break a law, you're a party to that, so then you are breaking the law too. Maybe he would institute a Penis Prosecution Pass whereby if'n you have one, you're not subject to prosecution for helping a woman get an abortion. Women will get the...Vagina Violator Visa..and be prosecuted to the fullest. What an asshat.

This reminds me of a question that was asked to Ben Carson during one of the Republican debates. In a discussion about terrorism, national security, etc., one of the mods asked him if he would be okay with killing thousands of innocent children How do you even answer that
