True size of the Kate/Diana sapphire

Here's a 10.66 ct sapphire for size comparison. I know this sapphire doesn't look the same because its a Ceylon and also the halo is different. But to me, it looks larger than Diana's.

Hi RWS,
Do you happen to know what this was selling for? Or the website I could find it please?

Hi BD, the website is www.romanovrussia.com. The 10.66 sapphire doesn't seem to be on there anymore, although it was there just a few days ago when I checked.

Have you seen this by David Klass @Jambalaya ?

It's 16 x 13mm, 13 carats but he's commented that it "looks" 18 carats. So that suggests that (a) 16 x 12mm is not typical for a 12 carat sapphire, and (b) there can be a 5-carat variation in weight based on visual appearance.

Also it's a gorgeous ring :kiss2: I much prefer this colour to the royal ring. But, personal preference and all that!

And yes, I would also have picked the biggest ring on the tray, come on, we are PSers

Thankyou. I’m still trying to work out what to do with my sapphire and pricing things like this helps me to understand the market better. Although the price of sapphires is all over the joint. I’ve been told may be worth anything between $10,000 -$30,000 which is a massive difference (obviously) and the difference between me keeping it or trying to sell it.

EDIT - I found it on their site - it’s priced at $38,000 and is much nicer then mine IMO
(I also meant to say above that the prices I have quoted for mine are in Australian dollars not US - so substantially less - last time I checked $10,000 AUS was worth around $6,500 US).

Here is the carat size, according to the jeweler that made it:

Unless they lost the specs, I think 12 carats is the correct one. It could be that they cut it very deep.

Hi,

The ring is listed on Romanov Russia's "New Arrivals" page. It is $38K

EDITED: oops, I see you already found it! Good luck with selling yours. Yours is beautiful.

Now I'm wondering how good it would look if someone took it out, precision cut it and got rid of the excess depth, and replaced it. Probably lighter and sparklier?

Interesting as to why it was made in white gold rather than platinum - certainly price wouldn't have been a factor, so I wonder why?

I’m late to this Princess Diana party but am presently on a journey to own one myself.
Out of fashion today but go figure.
The heart wants what the heart wants.
The only thought I had as to why Di’s ring was 18k gold instead of platinum is that gold prices were higher in 1981.
For those of us who lived through the ‘80’s, gold was everything.
No one wore platinum.
Just a thought....

Interesting! I guess we are in a similar situation now, as gold prices are higher than platinum? Even accounting for the higher density and need for greater skill / cost to work with platinum - my local jeweller quoted the same price for a piece in 18K gold or platinum.

In my mind (born in the 80s so started buying jewellery in the 00s, when white metal was worshipped), white gold seemed to be the "can't afford platinum" substitute. But I've been surprised by how much I like my white gold temp setting - it is lovely and light. I intended to replace it with a platinum setting one day but may not actually want to now!
