Hi! I am new to the world of colored gems, so I know some Sapphires (many) are heat treated. But I liked the 3 baguette design of the ring below....

It came with an appraisal (which I assumed was over-rated) but specs:

1 Rectangular Faceted 8.73 x 5.46 x 3.36 Sapphire
2 Baguette Cut 5.0 -3.0mm H,I, SI
Marked Platinum
4.67 Grams

Replacement Value in USD was $4,300

I got the ring from the UK yesterday night- and the sapphire while pretty (I like dark) clearly showed a heat treatment. I took it to my local jeweler who said something like "heat treated but natural....the cloud I slightly see could be from diffusion"....

SO my question is, was $1500 way over-paid? Is heat-treated and diffusion like fracture filling diamonds? I am lost :(
It is a pretty ring for the price but...s-l1600-4.jpg

I don’t know anything about sapphires so I can’t comment on that. I’m sure the colored stone board would have lots of feedback.

However, the setting made of platinum with some substantial baguettes seems to be worth the price you paid. Here’s a similar blue Nile version (which I think had lower carat weight baguettes):

Hi! Thank you! I agree the setting is pretty nice. How do I move it to gemstone?

It's platinum with two diamonds the setting alone to have made would probably cost around that. If the sapphire is heat only then it's a bargain if it has been diffused the sapphire has little to no value at all.

Heat treatment is not visible with the naked eye. being dark isn't a byproduct of heat treatment either. If its heat only especially without a report, thank your lucky stars. Heat treating can clean up a stone, getting rid of silk, and making the stone sparkle more.

Surface dying and fracture filling (especially when done really badly) can be apparent to the naked eye.

By the same token, I don't think diffusion is necessarily bad, as long as the consumer is educated and knows exactly what their getting.

TO that end, if you really need to know what you have, unset the stone and send to AGL for analysis as they have a LIBS machine. I would not keep a ring I was unhappy with especially the center stone. I would just return it because it would make me nuts not knowing what type of treatments the stone has.

@MrsWhitney ! How the devil are you?? There is a thread currently in Hangout asking if anybody knows how you are - you should pop over?

Beautiful ring, by the way. I agree with the others in that the setting & diamonds alone look to be expensive. I say if you love it, keep it.

I wanted to say hello, too, and see how you are doing!

As others have said, the setting is likely worth what you paid. I'd get another opinion on the sapphire!
