And just because it''s pretty and not everybody has been to Virginia...this is my school during the first snow of the year. It started around midnight, which is why the picture is so dark.

Two tigers at a monastary in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. This picture was taken with my camera, along with several pictures of me petting the tigers which I can put up if anybody is interested...
I''m very interested!

Great pics princess. I want to see a pic of you petting those tigers. Love the snowy shot of your school, is that UVA?? And love the pic of the Duomo ( I can't spell it either) in Florence, have fond memories of it.

Wow Princess, those are some wonderful pictures and places!!!!

Ok, tiger pictures. (And no, I don''t go to UVA. Good guess, though! I go to the University of Mary Washington which used to be part of UVA.)

This is when we got there. My mom, boyfriend, and I showed up just in time for the last tiger to be walking to their playground, and one of the volunteers that works there asked if we were there to walk with the tigers. I kind of nodded (more out of confusion from hearing English, and was agreeing to "Yes that is a tiger walking in front of me" not "Oooooh, let me walk him!") and the next thing I knew he took everything but my sunglasses and put my hand on the tiger''s back.

Ok, I learned two things from the whole tiger petting experience.

1) When you know that if they decide to kill you, they will, it is surprisingly calming. If you look in the background in this picture you can see the tourist area of the "enclosure". Basically, a rope separated the tigers from the people. And not even a thick rope. More of a cord, really.

2) Despite what every 8 year old girl who was obsessed with tigers ever heard, they really *can* be big kittens if they''ve been raised around people (but they really, really could kill you quite easily). One in particular LOVED having the spot behind his ears scratched, and purrs when you do it. Now, I don''t know if anybody else has heard a tiger purr, but when it is unexpected, it''s probably the scariest sound in the world until you figure out what it is. This same tiger liked a friend of ours so much that he rolled onto his back and plopped his head onto her lap so she''d keep petting him.

Oh boy, have I ever earned the time off (that''s it for the year, though). The FI and I will be going on the cruise, followed by a couple of days in Paris (Fauchon, here I come). After that, I''ll be going to Singapore, during which I''ll go to Indonesia and possibly Thailand. Then, it''ll be Australia. Phew!

princesss the photos of you with the tigers are SO cool!! I can''t even imagine how it felt. Kind of makes me want to go there and "accidentally" say that I am there to walk the tigers too!!!

surfgirl, what a fantastic job you have!!! I read through a couple of the entries on your blog and I''m anxious for you to post more. I like the way you write and I appreciate your respectful accounts of the places that you''ve been to. I laughed out loud about the fellow airline passengers. :) I''ve read travels blogs before where the writers just whine and complain about everything in any country that is not like their home country. (e.g. "it''s such a dirty country, the people spit on the table and have no manners, the people are disgusting, they have no style, the food is nasty...etc etc.") I think it''s nice to read a travel blog that points out the interesting aspects of different countries, both good and bad, in an enlightening and respectful way, instead of just recounting its shortcomings compared to one''s native country. kudos to you!!!!!!

more travel eye candy please!!!

crown jewel (did you change your avatar???), thank you so much for the kind words! I was just trying the blogging thing for traveling because I have so many weird experiences that nobody would believe and sometimes I need to vent when I''m in country for long periods of time so this is becoming a good way to vent, and it''s rather amusing when I read them back later on... I''ll be in the Caribbean as of tomorrow night so check back from Sunday onwards as I''ll be trying my best to take some photos and make some entries while I''m there! Enjoy and thanks for checking it out.
