Traditional 6 Prong Setting Comparo

I have been enamored with the Excel Tiffany replica lately and was wondering if anyone here on the forums has it.

Can anyone comment on it? From what you have seen - how do you think it would stack up to some of these heavy platinum rings that sell for like 600.

I have the Excel Tiffany replica and really love it. It's very nicely made and the head is beautiful, very fluid and elegant. If you do go ahead and get the setting from Excel (Superbcert), I would recommend having them set the stone for you. If they don't, it voids the lifetime warranty, which, in my case, I needed. Everything worked out in the end, but looking back, it probably would have been best to have their setter do the work.

The WF 6 prong you linked isn't at all like the Tiffany replicas (WF has one as well, by the way). It's more of a generic solitaire mounting in which the diamond sits up quite tall. The prongs don't cup the diamond like the Tiffany replicas do; to me, they look a bit like spokes, much more straight up and down than angled out to the side. I'm not a big fan of these settings. For the extra few hundred, I'd much rather have a Tiffany replica. There are several other companies that make a simiar ring, some a bit less expensive than others. Off the top of my head, there's James Allen (DCD), Nice Ice, betterthandiamond.com, Union Diamond (I believe Kit posted her new engagement ring from Union Diamond in SMTR forum -- this is a much less expensive version of the replica and it looks quite nice).

The betterthandiamond Tiffany replica looks like a winner from a value standpoint. Its a shame they don''t have a super collection of diamonds to choose from or they would be a worthy alternative. Those Asha diamond stimulants were pretty crazy.

I wasn''t able to discern which ones were the Tiffany Replicas on the James Allen and Union websites.

I wonder how much of a hassle it is to buy a diamond from one place, a setting from a another place, then get it set locally..

Yeah, it's a bit of a hassle... but certainly "do-able". And nothing that many of us Diamond Geeks here on PS haven't done before you.

(Although my vote would be to have the place where you get the setting set the stone.)

I would actually prefer to have the diamond company set your stone....if you do purchase online the setting company can send the setting to the diamond company. The diamond is the most valuable of the entire equation, so I'd rather have the original owner of the diamond do the setting than someone locally OR the setting company but if you can't have the diamond company do it, then maybe the setting company...locally if I brought a bunch of components to my jeweler he'd probably be upset that I didn't purchase anything from him but expected him to set it all perfectly.

For some reason, I always have a problem on my computer getting on the Union Diamond website. Perhaps someone else can link you.

I purchased my stone and setting from two different places and had my stone set at a third place. Some jewelers don't mind, but they tend to charge a bit more than if you purchased one or both of the ring components from them. A lot of people do this. But it would be nice to order them both from the same place if possible. All of the places mentioned (with the exception of betterthandiamond.com) have very nice stones. WF has a nice Tiffany replica as well and a lot of stones to choose from. Same with Nice Ice, Superbcert, and James Allen. Good luck!!!

The knife edge is pretty substantial, which I like. I think the band is approx 2.3 mm so it''s thinner than some other tiffany replicas out there, when I was doing my research that was one of my top priorities. I got the stone and setting separately and had a local jeweler set it with no problems.

What size am I looking for........
I have been a Good Old Gold Hound since the beginning of my search because I like B-Scope images so much.
Excel has some really nice diamonds as well, but they seem to cost a little more than the H&A''s on GOG.

Ideally I want something in the .84-.99 range in an H&A. I would be willing to go as low as J and SI1.
My ceiling with the setting included is 5,000, which interestingly translates to a new bump in my research. Check the new post I will be putting up...
