Hello all,

I found this listing on Craiglist and was interested.

Tiffany Engagement ring with Provenance
0.41 carat
Grade VS!
Color E
Original sales receipt available
firm price

I want to buy it not necessarily to wear but, to possibly trade-in. What would be my options for trading in? I know it would have to be double the price. Can the trade-in go towards other pieces of jewelry or only rings? There is a possibility I'll keep it if I like it but, if I don't, I do not want to be stuck with it.

Thanks in advance!

I don't think Tiffany's trade in policy is transferable. Make sure to ask them BEFORE you do this deal if it's an important issue in your decision to buy this item.

You should really check with Tiffany's to make sure that you can trade in/trade up if you are not the original owner/purchaser.

We upgraded with Tiffany back in December, but my husband was the original purchaser of the ring. You bring the ring to the store and they send it to NYC to have a value assigned. You receive this, minus a small processing fee (something like 10%) as the trade-in value. You must then spend twice that amount on your upgraded ring.

What ring are you looking to upgrade to? If it is just a simple solitaire, you can get an exact replica for thousands less.

For this question, you REALLY need to speak to someone at Tiffany's rather than ask us. In fact, I would call more than one Tiffany store to be sure you get the same answer.

FWIW, I sold a diamond to a person and normally the vendor would not transfer the ownership for a trade-in, but under the circumstances agreed to do so. You just never know till you ask *the company*!

Don't call a store - call the HQ (212) 755-8000 and just get the person's name. I really bet you can do it; immagine all the legal wrangling if you couldn't - only one person's name on the receipt, but you used joint funds, the person dies and willed it to you, so it's legally yours, you got it in the divorce settlement etc. How would they hash all that out? They are probably thrilled to have you spend double their oh-so-high appraisal. I remember one gal who bought such a ring and upgraded here on PS, but I don't remember the name. Good luck! Let us know the answer!

Unless you absolutely are committed to spending a Tiffany & Co retail price for what you want there would be no other reason to try to buy a ring in order to do a trade-in with them. If you have to spend double, you are spending far more than you would spend to get a similar quality item without the T & Co name. It is a way for a brand name store to encourage repeat business, but you'd do better finding a genuine Tiffany & Co ring which you would want to wear from a second hand vendor who will proved the necessry documentation and will guarantee the provenance. Just like you can find a 0.41ct diamond ring, you can find a larger one if you persist.

Absolutely excellent advice! :appl:
