Hi PSers. Today being my birthday I spent all day (four hours!) at Stanford University with an oncologist.

Bottom line: they did not like the quality of the MRIs or mammograms that my other medical center did. They want it all redone and want me to meet with one of their experienced surgeons. I am quite shocked. They told me cancel my surgery for this Friday.

I am really concerned that there is a cancer there that has been missed all along but they cannot tell from what they have and I won''t know for a while. Same time, I feel safer, better with these people at Stanford.

My head is spinning and I am scared and relieved at the same time. I only pray there is no cancer there already. I will update.

I feel like I am in a medical TV show.

Ugh, Beacon, I am so sorry. Stanford is an amazing hospital (a dear friend has spent much time there throughout her lifetime and her care has been nothing but phenomenal). I hope they resolve this all for you very soon so you can move forward with a diagnosis and plan of treatment.

Beacon sweetheart,

First of all, what a horrible way to spend your birthday.

Secondly, I have to say that you could not be at a better place. I love Stanford. I know that they will take extra special care of you. They have top quality doctors and specialists there.

Years ago, I had a back problem no doctor in my town could figure out what it was. One said this, one said that. Finally, they sent me to Stanford. I was diagnosed and fixed.

My daughter was ill at age 8. Again, no doctor could figure out what she had. She was sent to Standford Childrens Hospital in Palo Alto and was diagnosed with RA and treated by top doctors.

What I am trying to say.... You will be in excellent hands. Top notch facility, top notch doctor''s. If you do need therapy of some sort, that will also be top notch. I guarantee it.

I know how scared you must be, but please know that we are all here for you.

Much love to you honey,
Linda

I''m so sorry this has been such a roller coaster ride! Hopefully now you have better doctors who will figure out exactly what''s wrong and plan the best treatment for you. My thoughts are with you.

Hang in there! Don''t panic and scare yourself too much. You are in very good hands for health care so do not worry too much until they know more.

I am thinking of you!

I''m sorry you are going through this, and especially on your birthday! Sheesh! I agree with what others have said, that it''s better to go for the best possible medical care and opinions. I hope it all works out okay for you. You have kind of been my role model. I''m afraid of mammograms, but got one around the time you did and had questionable results with no biopsy. Well, now my doc is sending me to a different (better) hospital to repeat the mammogram/ultrasound/biopsy. I have taken inspiration from reading your posts, and knowing what you are going through at this time. I don''t know anything for sure yet either. Good luck, and take care. You will be in my thoughts.

Lyra, you are doing just the right thing. Don''t be afraid of the mammo and biopsy. Seek them. They are your friends. Please, everyone on this board, do the same.

Today has been crazy, absolutely. But this morning I was darn near inconsolable and I could not figure out why. After I got done at Stanford I feel washed out, abit surreal, but I can tell these guys are really, really good. I am not in tears; I actually feel pretty stable. I only hope I have enough time to catch whatever there may be before it catches me.

Down there today I saw many terribly ill people. Some were very young. It was awfully hard to see this. I know some will survive and they are getting care. But it hit home how precious our health is and even young age is no guarantee.

So Lyra, keep asking questions - don''t be afraid to seek out all the advice.

Beacon --

I too know from personal experience that the doctors at Stanford are the best. If it weren't for Stanford, my younger brother might no have survived his bout with lymphoma many years ago. The fact that your doctors are insisting on better images before they proceed is a good sign, I think.

Beacon,

Ditto what the others have said abt the Drs at Stanford wanting to have the MRI's and mamograms redone. This is a good sign. I'd hate to also think that you'd have had to go for surgery on the 14th on mis-infor or lack of information.

I know it's been terribly hard for you, it *has* been a roller-coaster, but really think about this as a chance for the Drs to finally tell you that you don't have cancer.

BIG HUGS to you and happy birthday.

I will continue to hope and pray for the best for you.

Oh Beacon, I’m sorry for your mixed up day. Birthday, 4 hours at Stanford and conflicting news. But I do think the folks at Stanford are great and offer good care. Second opinions and a second set of MRIs will be helpful to confirm their diagnosis. I hope you get some results before too long. It’s so hard to wait.

Double hugs to you.

I am feeling ok. Stanford is moving at light speed. I go back again tomorrow for new mammos and back again on Monday to meet the surgeon. That Stanford oncologist is moving mountains for me, getting people to see me so quick. What a wonderful man he is.

Plus a dear friend in NY put me with one of the top oncologists in the country, New Jersey based. This oncologist will be calling me over the weekend to review my case and give recommendations. He can also tell me which people at Stanford will be best suitable for me as I am sure he will know them. This is very special and I am so thankful to my friend that he reached out to me like this.

I still am rather shocked but feel confident that we are establishing a team that can help me as best as possible. This situation has changed totally in the past 24 hours, at least as far as my treatment goes. Now I have to hope we don''t find any bad stuff in there lurking.

Praying for the best.
