Hi all,
I''ve been lurking for about a week now since I started seriously looking at diamonds.
I am planning on asking my girlfriend of just about 1 yr (although I''ve known her for 6-7yrs) to marry me within the next 2 months or so. I plan on re-creating our first date with a visit to a New York museum and a Central Park boat ride where I plan to "pop the question".
Now onto the dilema.
I went through ring shopping about a year and a half ago with an ex and it didn''t work out. I went to jeweler who was recommended by a couple of people i knew. He was informative, patient, polite and friendly and we worked together until I found a diamond and setting I liked. 2 weeks later it all was off and I cancelled the order without ever having turned any money over for a deposit.
This time around i went back to him for a diamond and he showed me about 5 to choose from in my price range and preferences. I picked out a 1.22ct Princess, H color, SI1 clarity, 0 fluorescence, no culet and polish and symetry were good. It just looked better than others with better color and clarity. I am not sure what the depth and table and dimensions are however but I know they were within an acceptable range. the price is $4950 and with the setting and tax it came out to $5777 I verbally told him i liked it and would want it to be ready by the end of the month or the beginning of next month. No money exchanged hands.
Today I went to another jeweler on the recommendation of a couple of co-workers and he (the jeweler) priced me a diamond.
1.02ct Princess cut, G color, VS1, 5.63 X 5.51 X 3.94, 71.5% depth, 79% table, good polish and symetry, no culet and no fluorescence, thick to very thick girdle. The price on the tag in the jewelry center was $6200, i believe. He offered it to me for $4300. Then with the solitaire platinum setting it would come out to below $5000
I have a feeling that the 1.02ct is the better deal keeping in mind that i don''t care if the stone is smaller. Since i am leaning towards the latter stone I am conflicted because I have a sense of loyalty to the first jeweler and would like to give him my business but it is more money than I''ve ever spent on anything that wasn''t a car or house.
I apologize for the length of the post but I wanted to be thorough. Any input or advice on the stones or the situation in general would be greatly appreciated.
