Hi all,
I''ve been lurking for about a week now since I started seriously looking at diamonds.

I am planning on asking my girlfriend of just about 1 yr (although I''ve known her for 6-7yrs) to marry me within the next 2 months or so. I plan on re-creating our first date with a visit to a New York museum and a Central Park boat ride where I plan to "pop the question".

Now onto the dilema.

I went through ring shopping about a year and a half ago with an ex and it didn''t work out. I went to jeweler who was recommended by a couple of people i knew. He was informative, patient, polite and friendly and we worked together until I found a diamond and setting I liked. 2 weeks later it all was off and I cancelled the order without ever having turned any money over for a deposit.

This time around i went back to him for a diamond and he showed me about 5 to choose from in my price range and preferences. I picked out a 1.22ct Princess, H color, SI1 clarity, 0 fluorescence, no culet and polish and symetry were good. It just looked better than others with better color and clarity. I am not sure what the depth and table and dimensions are however but I know they were within an acceptable range. the price is $4950 and with the setting and tax it came out to $5777 I verbally told him i liked it and would want it to be ready by the end of the month or the beginning of next month. No money exchanged hands.

Today I went to another jeweler on the recommendation of a couple of co-workers and he (the jeweler) priced me a diamond.

1.02ct Princess cut, G color, VS1, 5.63 X 5.51 X 3.94, 71.5% depth, 79% table, good polish and symetry, no culet and no fluorescence, thick to very thick girdle. The price on the tag in the jewelry center was $6200, i believe. He offered it to me for $4300. Then with the solitaire platinum setting it would come out to below $5000

I have a feeling that the 1.02ct is the better deal keeping in mind that i don''t care if the stone is smaller. Since i am leaning towards the latter stone I am conflicted because I have a sense of loyalty to the first jeweler and would like to give him my business but it is more money than I''ve ever spent on anything that wasn''t a car or house.

I apologize for the length of the post but I wanted to be thorough. Any input or advice on the stones or the situation in general would be greatly appreciated.

oh lordie- you are about to be spanked by the table police!!!

With that table, the chances of that stone being a dazzler are slim to none.

Pass on that doggie. I mean this VERY VERY nicely- but the fact that you're not sure of the other stone's stats is saying that you might need to get a little more education b/f shelling out this much dough!

#s in fancies, won't tell you everything, but they are at least somewhere to start....

p.s.- any jeweler who has those little tags with the "fake" price is no jeweler I would want to work with. If that's not the price, then don't put the tag on. That's done as a ploy to make you think you are getting a good deal.... I am not recommending any sites...but :
#1) Dirtcheap: "ideal" 1.09 G Vs2 71.5 depth,67 table 4500
#2) 1.03 GVS2 Signature Series Ideal, 4629
#3) (I doubt your guys gave you this much info and analysis .....

OK, so is there an acceptable table range for a diamond that size? There was an E color same size with a table of 80 or so and it looked rectangular. The co-workers who recommended him did a lot of business with them and he said it was a 25% discount or so. I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt since I dropped the name of his customer.

Moremoremore,
You are correct I need a lot more education in this which is why I started posting. Are there tried and true specification for diamonds in and around the 1 ct range? Is there a link with a chart i can print?

BTW they both showed me the certifications on all the stones. The "H" was a GIA cert and the "G" was a GIA as well. I just didn't know how to read anyof them with any certainty.

sweets- i don't care how many names you drop...if the jeweler says he's giving you a 25% discount....run!

OH VALERIA!!!!! WHERE ARE YOU? She put it so well the other day regarding what I'm about to say.....There is a guide out there.... GEMAPPRAISERS.COM .... go to the bottom left, click on cut "AGA Cut Grade Chart and Rules"...on the right, click princess...there it is.... Keep in mind that there is no science with fancies, and that this is only a guide.

However, from my own personal experience as a princess lover (I'm working on #4...hehehehe), my preference is to start with a depth no greater than 73 (so the stone isn't deep and thus small for its carat weight) and a table of no greater than 70. THAT DOES NOT GUARANTEE A GREAT STONE!!!! And that's the TIP of the iceberg... But it doesn't hurt! Please read the posts on princess cut stones...they will be very helpful to you....Did you check out the GOG web site? GOG and other vendors here can give you that kind of detailed info that you might want. While there is nothing wrong with going by your eyes to tell you if a stone is beautiful, don't pay a premium for a well cut stone when in fact, it's cruddy!!! (and I would run from any jeweler who is showing me 80 tables...in fact, I did!)

p.s. I will only accept a GIA cert (for a princess cut). I had a bad experience with EGL and will only buy a GIA. That's just me...and that's to make my life easier....You can read up on that here too! I prefer it bc I have a higher confidence level in the GIA than EGL.... Doens't mean the EGL stone isn't what the cert says it is! Just my preference!

moremoremore,

I just leafed through the tutorial link here and found some info to help guide me. I'll check ou the links you mentioned as well. Thanks!

See this is the kind of advice and I was looking for, and all I had to do was ask.

I appreciate your input and I'm sure I'll be back with some more questions.

And I don't know nearly as much as most people here! I'm sure they will chime in....but I'm the only loser still at "work" and on the internet...if you wanna call it that at 5:30 on a Friday! LOL

i just want to say that thanks to this thread, i've had "torn between two lovers" running through my head all afternoon.

You should be able to find easily princess cuts with these size (surface face up) G-H, VS1-SI1. Weight could likely go from 1.1 to 1.4 for the same size, depending on cut (depth, really). A stone with the light return diagnostic in place would be nice

MNW,.....

When a jeweler starts throwing out "X% off Rap", smile blankly, and nod your head nicely as you back slowly toward the door. Once you get your hand on the door, grab the knob and bolt for your life. The "Rap Trap" is a VERY old marketing ploy!! The Rapaport Report is only a guideline for pricing diamonds. Diamonds are individual and unique, like people. Here's a link to an old thread with some information about pricing based on the Rapaport Report:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/appraisals-versus-purchase-price-and-rapaport.9437/

For a Princess Cut you want to keep the table and depth percentages around or below 70-72%, or so. Don't go too shallow in the depth, tho, or the diamond will have a washed out look.

There are several Vendors that maintain stock of professionally evaluated Princess cut diamonds. The diamonds are hand selected based on performance and overall quality. You might try:

www.dirtcheapdiamonds.com Signature Series

Rolling re: smile and back away.... LOL...picturing that in my head!

My favorite are those stupid tags that have the "real price" (yeah right) and from which they give you the "discount"
