Hi Etane,

My condolences. I know the feeling of the waiting game. (still waiting for my ering to arrive).

I hope Toppers won''t trouble you in the refund and that you will find another place to find the ring that you deserve.

Good luck!

Wow, I''m so sorry that you had to go through this. I wish you all the luck.

I just want to type this down while the conversation I had with Bill is still fresh in my mind.

The ring arrived at Toppers at about 10am according to UPS. I waited until 11:20 to give him a call so that he has time to examine the ring and to read a letter I attached in the parcel which pretty much mirrors everything I have written in this thread albeit within 4 paragraphs.

The first thing he said was he is going to give me my refund. However, he wanted me to hear him out. He said I never informed him that I was enforcing a deadline as part of the deal. He brought this up at least 4 times during our conversation. I told him to stop putting words in my mouth. And, I told him if there were any deadline it was self-imposed because he’s the one who first told me it will take 4 weeks then 6 weeks. I interpret this as Bill trying to pigeon hole me as my sole reason for wanting refund is because they went over some deadline that I never expressed nor implied; therefore, it can’t be enforced.

The sole reason I am returning the ring is because it looks awful, and the service I have received so far is not much better. He just doesn't accept these facts and spent like 10 mins rationalizing everything that happened. I feel like a psychologist hearing him out.

Then, he told me the receipt he gave me has written “Stone set finger length-wise” which means the stone is to be set perpendicularly to the width of the ring. However, when he wrote this down, both my gf and I questioned him whether that meant the stone is to be set parallel to the width of the ring. He said yes. What do we know. We don't work in the business. Also, he told me on Friday over the phone that he recalled talking to Boin and asking Boin to set the stone parallel to the width of the ring.

There's nothing wrong with him trying to save a sale. However, it just seems he's using misdirection tactics. Then, he told me that he will not accept another special order from me again. Of course, he conceded that he knows I will never buy anything from Toppers again.

Anyways, I told him to please refund me by tomorrow as I don’t want the charge to be included in my next CC statement due next week. He said he will process it tomorrow.

I spent the extra 15 mins on the phone to hear him out, so he can convince himself that he's done nothing wrong or out of the ordinary. And, I will get my refund.

That’s that. *relieved*

Thanks, Pricescope, for enduring this ordeal with me.

awww etane.... I am glad your saga with Toppers is over. I hope you can move forward now and eventually get the ring of both of your dreams. Good luck and keep us posted.

Next time, tell the jeweler you want the stone set east/west. I think that is a pretty universal description. And yes, I can see why you don''t like it. An east/west orientation would have looked so much more unique.

When we were looking for a stone, we were really only looking for a round gem. I was convinced by Bill to go for a cushion. We ended up with a rectangular cushion. We were iffy about it at first. But, when my gf turned the stone sideways, we thought it made a world of difference. What seemed like tradition setting became unique and modern. So, yes, the orientation, especially in this case, is very important to us. Next time, if we end up with another rectangular stone, we will be sure to tell them "east, west please".
