Aside from the perfect cleavage which any good lapidary would know to orient 7 degrees off the table plane, is topaz (regular, real, assume fracture-free, no nukes) durable enough for an everyday ring? I dont mean a gardening, mountain-biking kind of everyday, just the briefcase carrying, subway riding, falling off of curbs in front of speeding taxis, schmoozing wealthy clients in the gallery kind of everyday.

It''s serendipity that you posted this. I just asked Doug from Bespoke that same question this morning. When I get an e-mail back I''ll let you know what he says...

Thanks Treen. It''s totally serendipity then because it is his topaz I am thinking to use! And even stranger and more serendipitous is that my first job when I moved to NY was at Serendipity. I did not last there long.

Sure is, I''ve had my topaz ER for nigh on 18 years. Had the crown re-polished once.

Yup, I know people who have them for decades and wear like once or twice a week with no problems. They''re not the most durable stone you can find, but certainly far from fragile as well.

With the type of usage you’ve described, I don’t see why it cannot be an everyday wear ring although I did cringe at the falling off curbs in front of taxis part. I’m not sure any gemstone can survive that if hit the wrong way, diamonds included.
