Toothfairies and money under the pillow

What is the appropriate amount the tooth fairy should bring for a child who''s five and also one who is seven?

I cannot recall the amounts my son has received, but with his last tooth, he lost it the night we moved, so the toothfairy brought him $10. He lost another tooth today and I''m not sure about another $10 as my wallet is pretty light!

My younger son is about to loose his first tooth, so the amounts should be equal, right?

Maybe the toothfairy should get them treats instead?

My stepson-to-be is 10, and we give him $5 for each tooth he loses. He also gets a regular allowance though, so take that as you will!

It was $1 when I was a kid!

BUT, I was an only child and I lost my teeth much later than most kids. I didn''t start until I was about 8 and even then, most of them were pulled by the dentist. The ones I pulled myself were very painful and took forever because I had such long roots.

The kids I babysit for get $1 per tooth (and always a dollar coin) and $5 for the first and last.

My kids - well DD has yet to lose a tooth - all get $1 per tooth and $5 for the last one. I *ahem* the tooth fairy gives them gold dollars. My intention was to give them more of a keepsake than spending money.

My kids lost their teeth late, I gave them $5 for the first tooth, and $1 for the rest.... Some were pulled by the dentist, they got a treat afterwards, no money, guessing they knew by then there was no tooth fairy.

Nebe - the pink glitter is so cute. What a neat idea!

Eva - The tooth fairy forgot at our house once too. I told my son it was because the cat was sleeping in his room and the toothfairy had been scared to come in. . .of course she came the next night

Now I stick a note on my toothbrush to remind me.

I used to get about $10-20 a tooth but the norm was about $1 when I was growing up .

I never did the tooth under the pillow my mum had a special little tiny china tea cup (had this beautiful blue and pink floral pattern on it) and pop it on the window sill in the kitchen with my tooth in water when I woke up the tooth and water were gone and the money was inside the cup .

Hehe... a few years ago when we were home for the weekend, she had them all lined up on the kitchen counter to show my DH. He still quotes from them.

My son ended up with $1 and a large pack of sugar free gum. My younger son said, "that''s all?" when my older son told him what he received. I think they''re getting too spoiled! lol

I only lost four teeth on my own, the rest had to by pulled by the dentist. SO, as an incentive the tooth fairy gave me $5 per tooth if I lost it on my own, as I''m sure the $5 was nothing compared to the cost of paying the dentist to pull it. I got $1 per tooth if it was pulled.

The best part was that my mom wrote teeny tiny little square letters on parchment paper to me from the tooth fairy. She also laminated them, and I still have them tucked away in my Hope Chest.

They said things like:

Dear Haven,

Thank goodness you didn''t lose this tooth last night--I had the most incredible date with the Muffin Man! He took me out for a delicious dinner and then we danced until dawn! He even held my hand on our magic carpet ride back to Fairyland.
This is a pretty little canine you''re giving me, it will look fabulous in my living room next to the molar you lost last month. Try to pull the next one out on your own, okay kiddo?

Oh how cute! I recall my mom finding a letter I wrote to the tooth fairy too. I'm not sure where it is now?

That reminds me...

My parents kept every single tooth my brother and I lost. They gave each of us a box filled with our teeth, each one wrapped in a paper with the date we lost it and special notes. Very neat idea. I love it and will do the same for my children.
