Happy new year! This time of year reminds me of a poem I heard as a kid (ok, so I updated it for inflation... a lot).

Gung Hay Fat Choy...
Lay See Lok Doy...
Sup Mun Mmm Yew...
Manh Mun Lok Doy...

:D

In Singapore my sisters will be getting up at around this time, make my parents a cup of tea and go "Gong Xi Fa Cai! Hong Bao Yi Ge Lai!!"

(translated to: "Happy New Year! One Red Packet Please!" - or something like that
9.gif
)

Red packets filled with money are usually given out by your ''elders'' in the chinese culture during Chinese New Year

Happy New Year.

There was a great radio interview with a Seattle Gal who told all about the traditions of Chinese & Korean new-year celebrations. The foods sounded wonderful. Made my mouth water. I love that family one of the main focuses!

To everyone who''s celebrated, I hope you have a festive occasion.

My mandarin is half past size as well but, it''s still abit better than Jades

. Each chinese "word" has 4 sounds to it; 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. The 1st is a light sound, sounding lighter towards the end of the sound. The 2nd sound is even from start to end. The 3rd sound is still light but slightly heavier towards the end. The 4th sound is heavy thoughout and sharp towards the end (like a command). It''s easier when you hear it for yourselves though.

Gong (1st) Xi (3rd) Far (1st) Cai (2nd), hong (2nd) bao (1st) yi (2nd) ge (4th) lai (2nd)

Iceman~ You really lose a lot of meaning during the translation. It''s hard to explain, as most of these proverbs have some small story to back it up. I read a lot of them when I was a kid, but don''t really remember much now. Can anyone else help?

Happy CNY!

....from a Happy Dragon. The fiancee and I have been warned that this is the last year for the big cash grab! She has many older, married siblings that gave us red envelopes. I guess next year, we have to give. (Oh well. It''s been a good run for me. Time to pay up!)

Hmmmmm, invoke the 1st year exemption rule.
