I almost snorted my drink when I read this.
I agree with the posters above that the vendor should not have been rude to you. They could have been honest about their lack of ability to give the level of customer service you needed.
I've been shopping around for custom settings, but am gun shy because I have had one bad experience with custom work. At one very high end B&M store, a salesperson kindly volunteered to get in settings/rings for me to try (close to what I want for a custom job) just to make sure I like what I think I like. I think this is very reasonable. I interpret this as partly meaning that I may be a difficult customer to please, but I think he's actually correct and I appreciate his willingness to work on a way to minimize the risk to both of us. Will this cost me more money? Heck yes--it's of the highest end stores in DC, and I would be paying for the customer service.
