I'm thinking of making a toi et moi style ring with a garnet (my birthstone) and a tourmaline (my partner's birth stone).

I just got this mozambique purple garnet from Barry. What color/size/shape tourmaline do you think would go well with it?
I'm thinking yellow gold for the setting. The garnet is 6.5mm round.

I think a copper bearing tourmaline would be the most attractive but sadly the most expensive

I could also potentially do garnet and opal but I worry about the softness of opal and if a cab and a faceted stone would look weird together.

Here's an example of a toi et moi or bypass ring.

Haha yeah, outside my price range for sure.

Thought I'd just post this as eye candy. I don't want to do anything this elaborate but thought it'd be a good example of mixing shapes.

I personally would prefer another faceted stone of the same size for a by-pass ring as I like symmetry.

As for the other CS, I believe a yellow-green will go well with the stone, like a Peridot.

Mmm, maybe I can find a mint green tourmaline? I like the idea of doing both our birthstones and not just mine :)

I think it would look good with a green tourmaline. Something like this one from GemRite maybe:

If you decide to go with an opal instead, then maybe a faceted one like this (but smaller in size since this one is a bit big at 8mm):

Yeah I like the tourmaline but worry that the cut being different from barry's style of round would annoy me? I dunno, I'm a little OCD maybe but I feel like I'd constantly be comparing the two round cuts and be annoyed that the runner up didn't perform as well.

What about something in pale gold and a yellow gold bezel seeing?

Here's one that's 6.5mm. it's from prima. It's listed a bit over 400 but I've seen them take offers also their ebay photos usually don't accurately show the stone sometimes, but they're usually very happy to send you back of the hand photos
