ok.. So I am narrowing down the "likes" and "dislikes" as to what my girl likes when it comes to engagement rings.. Pretty much the ring has to be three sided pave and princess cut.. She has stumbled across the halos and mentioned that she likes them but I cant pick up if she truly likes them as in she would like it or if she just thinks they look ok.. Personally I am not a fan of halo on a princess cut but whatever.. I think the halo just takes away from the actual diamond.. I mean it helps in making a small diamond look bigger then it is.. but when I look at a ring with a halo, sometimes it likes "where is the diamond".. but whatever.. one thing I am looking into is milgrain.. should I or should I not.. just wanted to get some opinions.. personally I like the way the milgrain looks.. I feel like it adds "elegance" to the ring.. or maybe that's not the right word..

These are two styles I am looking at as far as the band portion goes.. I like the way both look.. but again I am partial to the milgrain.. What do you guys think?

Is she aware that 3 sided pave is more expensive than one sided, which will be taking $$$ away from her center stone? And that it will be covered up by the wedding band? Is she aware that it is delicate and needs to be treated gently?

Agreed, especially with 2 pave rings rubbing against one another as they are in your first pic. If she loves the look of 3 sided pave and wants a wedding band with that feature, you could always get it on 2 sides so she sees it from the top down and from the profile on her hand.

As for your milgrain question, I adore milgrain, but I have seen some truly scary blobby milgrain in my day so make sure you are getting a good quality benchperson to do your setting. Who are you getting the setting from?

And that she'll need to wear a spacer between the two rings to keep them from eating each other to pieces?

I am sure she doesn't care lol.. But she has already been warned that she must be gentle with the ring due to the style.. I have already learned that with three sided pave you have to have the engagement ring and wedding band "welded" together so that they do not rub against each other or she has the option of not wearing both.. That will be her choice.. Budget wise I am looking at the 10-12k range.. Which I think I can get a nice size stone for that.. I am hoping that with the 10-12k I can get around a 1.5 karat center stone plus setting.. Can always go more if I have to but from what I have been seeing around the web I think I should be good to go..

As far as where I am getting it from I am looking into the Diamond Exchange here in NJ.. Located in Paramus..

10K for the diamond alone, 5K at least for the ring and band.

oh, my, what is the point of having 3 sided if you are going to solder them together? Sorry, I'm just not a fan of 3 sided... soldering together 3 sided is even worse, seems like a huge waste.

She wouldn't have to have them soldered together, but she would have to wear a spacer band between them. I would not get 3 sided pave personally since you mainly see the tops of the rings only.

I do prefer milgrain, except that is more of an antique look, and princess cuts are very contemporary stones. I do not like the second setting at all. The halo is much too bulky. Halos definitely give a boost in size appearance, though! I do think since she has very definite tastes in settings that you need to have her show you some specific setings that she likes.

I agree with the others that three sided pave seems to be an expensive way to go for something that you will neither see nor be able to completely appreciate. If she doesn't want to wear a wedding ring then I suppose I could see the appeal, but with a wedding ring..... I also really like the SK setting that Julie posted, though I wouldn't wear that with a wedder either.

I also think that you may need to re think your budget if you are hoping to do a quality setting and a 1.5 princess cut. You should only consider AGS or GIA graded stones...I prefer AGS when purchasing fancy shapes online since they have already been graded for light performance. If you are going to consider three sided pave then I would only recommended a few vendors...Sk, Victor Canera, Leon Mege, otherwise you could spend more time rep lost replacing lost stones than enjoying that actual ring.

Oh, and to answer your original question....I agree with DS. I love milgrain, however I think it is more suited to antique style stones and settings. I think of a princess cut as more of a modern style, so for me, I would forego the milgraining.
