To halo or not to halo my 3.15 carat antique marquise?

My new 3.15 Y color SI1 Marquise (17 x 7.5) is with David Klass to be set! He is such a dream to work with. I could use some suggestions on design. I want something very delicate with a thin band that showcases the diamond. So the big question is whether to halo or not!? For a diamond of this size, would a diamond halo, or diamonds on the band be overkill or detract from the center stone? Here's a photo of my new stone.

First idea: yellow gold frame with the diamond sunk down to protect the girdle with 3 delicate prongs on either side and no v-prongs.

I love the bezel on this David Klass ring with the milgrain just inside, except I want prongs (hate to cover up any real estate of my new big stone!) and a very thin plain band (with or without diamonds??)

Love this bezel by him as well, the soft finish is lovely.

OR should I halo it like this with tiny prongs? I greatly prefer this look to round diamonds.

I would love suggestions, photos etc! I am really excited to be designing my dream ring!

will you be using it as an engagement ring or a right hand ring? I love the color.. I am no fan of halos.. except on marquise diamonds.. I think I would use 18K gold with a halo of small yellow round diamonds (small) as you have that gorgeous stone you want to show off, and perhaps engraving on the sides.. I am looking forward to seeing your final ring! again.. gorgeous stone!

How long is your finger? If the galo would take if past your knuckle u wouldnt do it.

I agree. If it will go past your knuckle I vote don't halo. Beautiful diamond.

Haha thank you for decoding my idiotic post.
"If the HALO would take it past your knuckle I wouldnt do it"

That's what I get for posting as soon as I get up.

I'll throw in my 2 cents...I like split shanks on halos (minor split up near the stone). Gives the setting more E/W width through the middle.

Love the gold with your stone. Very pretty. Make sure David doesnt think that a bezel will close up the stone (probabaly won't
because its really big :-). )

check out 1st dibs marquise to see if you get any ideas...

Here is a halo example

This is more the kind of shank I like on a marquise (diamonds or just plain metal)

Oh, And I'm thinking no halo because it's already big but how do you plan on wearing it? Special occasions? Everyday?

Wow, gorgeous! I can't wait to see it completed. I vote a tiny halo and I really like the split shank photo that was shared.

So funny you posted this thing, I have loved it since the moment it was listed! This will be my engagement ring that I will wear all the time I have pretty small hands and wear a size 5. I have not seen my new beauty in person as it was a surprise from my husband after losing my OEC. His one request was that he likes the look of a thin band all the way around. I do too, so probably no split shank. What about diamonds on the band?

David actually agreed that he couldn't bare to bezel it. I love the cut of the rubies, but would consider diamonds. Being that the stone is 6/8" long, a halo would bring it close to my knuckle lol!

David wanted to do 14k instead of 18k but I didn't ask why. Because it is harder?

Love the suggestions!

My finger is 3" long, and is 1" to the knuckle

I would like to see your luscious marquise in yellow gold with: a very thin bezel with fine milgrain on the inside bezel, a thin bright cut pave shank edged in milgrain, and the edges of the shank engraved and also edged in milgrain. That would be stunning.

I need to look up the different pave styles! I like the type where you can barely see any metal, just diamonds. Is that bright cut? School me! I want he band suuuuuuper thin and sparkley!

I'd say no.
3.15 is huge, then marquise are massively long.

A halo on a 3.15 Marquise may not fit through doorways.

LOLOLOLOL! Yes and this one is 17mm long! She's massive. I'm as I excited.

If I do a solitaire I will do diamonds on the super thin band, just not sure what kind

I would set that beauty in a east west setting, which would make wearing a wedding band with it much easier. Congrats on the diamond; it's gorgeous!

With that many mms a halo and an East West setting will be to long up and down ways and too long across ways to set East West. I have seen a big Marquise set in a split shank and it looked amazing. So I would either have something plain or that.

Maybe David suggested 14k because he thinks the color is better suited to the color of your stone

The stone is actually much wider than my finger so an east west setting is out. I really like a gap between my rings so that won't be a problem. I just want to make sure it's blingy enough that it looks like an engagement ring and not a right hand ring, ya know?

Thank you so much for all of the great suggestions, I'll report back with the finished product! He said it should only take 10-14 days from start to finish which is crazy fast. I am very eager to see it.

WOW...just WOW...awesome stone! While I can see the stone just bezeled (which I LOVE the thought of & protected), I love the idea of a diamond bezel as well but with long bags & not rounds...like you posted. SO sleek & streamlined!! I love the look of the baguette halo so much more than the rounds for your stone.

Such a hard decision because there are SO many looks.. if you don't go with a diamond halo, I would consider a bezel ( because I personally love bezels for both protection & aesthetics ). A gold or platinum bezel can add a bit of width without the extra of adding diamonds ( width or cost). :wink2:

Just so you can see an example of a bezel set yellow diamond marquis. Here's my chubby and much smaller fancy yellow marquis set east west, bezel set. 1.09 carats. I just purchased it from Jewels by Grace.

ElleElle, I loved that ring the moment I saw it on her Instagram, I'm so happy you bought it! That bezel is perfection - I will show it to David and see what he thinks. The milgraine work on it is divine. His initial reaction was that it would hide too much of the stone and we both wanted to leave every inch visable but I keep coming back to yours and thinking maybe it would be fine. Congrats on your beauty!

Thanks!! I am in love with it and am really liking the idea of bezel setting it north south on a thin gold band like ElleElle.....I am thinking brushed finish too. But would you do diamonds on the band? So many choices ah!!

ElleElle is yours a knife edge band? Is it comfortable?

i would do a bullet or trilliant on each sides. that is like a buffer zone between the huge elongated center stone and the thin band. halo might be too overwhelming for such a big stone. this is just me though.

I think it also depends on how tinted it is in real life. If you want to bring out more yellow then a bezel and a cup underneath might work or it might not, or alternatively just a cup underneath a a fine halo of white stones to contrast the colour. If you don't want to play up the colour then go for a more simple setting.

Does a cup mean there is no open gallery and just a hole at the bottom? David will have to be my eyes on whether a bezel will play up the color. I like the idea of it being a chameleon stone and chose the Y color intentionally so maybe a bezel is the way to go. Is there a standard amount of edge that a bezel hides? I'm going to have him mock it up both ways.

Is an open pave style band easy to lose stones from? (Like the diamonds on the Leibish door prize ring)

What do y'all think about something like this in a marquise shape with a thin diamond band? I am worried about what covering the girdle in a bezel will do to the light return since it is a fairly shallow stone. I read all the threads on the affects of bezeling and now I'm nervous that I should just do classic V-prongs like the second photo? At least that prong style seems to disappear. Dang that marquise is dreamly lol!

Hi therainbowradish! Congrats on your amazing diamond! The milgrain on my ring is so fine and thin and really only on the outskirts of the stone. If you enlarge some of the photos from Grace's site you can see it barely covers any of the stone. I think your diamond would look amazing in that same milgrain!
