To good to be true?

Hi,
I think I came by a diamond that seems too good to be true based on the price. It is 1.74 carat D VS1 GIA ex-ex-ex for $ 18k. HCA score is 1.2. Table 58%, depth 61%, crown angle 33.5, pavilion angle 41, girdle medium to slightly thick 3.5%. Measurements 7.74-7.78x4.73 mm. Faint fluorescence and no cutlet. How could this be possible for this price? Maybe table % a bit high and crown angle a bit low but to score 1.2 on HCA seems impressive, right?
Thanks for the help in advance!

Are you sure the $18k isn't the price per carat, rather than the total price? Otherwise, if a legit vendor, I would presume it is a typo or pricing error.

It's the total price from a large online vendor...

I actually just made the purchase from BN. Did I get a good price?

Looks like it - I just saw a 1.63 E VS1 on WF for $27,900!

I hope it looks good in person. :)

Wow you got a steal!

Let's hope they don't cancel due to pricing error. Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

+1

+2 =)

Judging by the other diamond they have - same weight, clarity, color and similar dimensions - that is the per carat price. I hope it all works out but based on that one, it looks like it is a typo.

I called and talked to a BN gemnologist (1-800 # on BN website) and I told him that the price seemed great and I asked if something was wrong...he said that the diamond comes from a European source that always gives them great prices and BN only marks the stones up a certain amount regardless of the price charged by the source. BN uses many sources throughout the world evidently. Thanks for all the comments. I'm excited. I'll keep y'all updated.

I am so curious now! I hope it is beautiful and you got a steal! please post pics when you get it!!

Did you happen to notice the date on the report? Diamonds sell for what they a worth, I truly hope that this works out for you, but you know the saying...if it's too good to be true...

That said, I would just proceed with caution, find out everything you can about the stone before hand. Ask them to confirm with the dealer that there has been no damage to the stone that would affect the stones clarity grading, ask about the age of the report, attempt to get magnified images...though as I understand it BN never supplies these, it's worth a shot. Get what you can, and worst case they have a decent return policy and best case, you end up with a great deal!

It really would be awesome if this works out for you but following Christina's advice...I would look into this.

The fact that they deal with a supplier in Europe who gives them "great prices" means nothing. Diamonds are a global commodity based on an international pricing system so the chances that a supplier anywhere is selling them for incredibly cheap prices (less than wholesale) is highly unlikely.

If there was no error or "problem" with the stone, there's a good chance the GIA truly misgraded the diamond. It happens. That doesn't mean you still didn't get a good deal, though.

Good luck to you and let us know how this turns out!

It's Blue Nile ... if the diamond doesn't work out, it will be an easy return.

Right! That's what I'm thinking, if they'll let you get it home for that price, seems like a no brainer. Take a good lok at it when you get home, of it looks like it matches the gia cert to your eyes, just go get it appraised. Maybe buy an idealscope. The amount of savings is totally worth the hassle of sending it back if it doesn't work out.

So, as I mentioned, I placed the order with a BN credit card and got the order confirmation yesterday. It was "official". I then got a call today saying that there was a pricing error and the diamond was not ~$18k...it was actually supposed to be listed at ~$26k. The BN representative offered to re-sell me the diamond that I had already purchased for the increased price. Alternatively, he said that he could send me a list of similarly priced diamonds. I told him that I was not happy with these potential solutions. He discussed the matter with his supervisor(s) and they are talking to the source in Antwerp to see what can be done. He is going to call me tomorrow. I'll see how BN handles this...it will be interesting...

we all told you it was likely a pricing error. You were hoping they wouldn't notice the mistake.

If the situation were reversed, how would you handle it?...an honest mistake has been made.

Pricing errors sometimes occur, it's not only a problem for vendors selling diamonds but for all online retailers where enormous amounts of data are inputted everyday. It's for this reason that vendors carry disclaimers such as this one from Blue Nile....

Product Availability and Pricing

If you're interested in a piece of jewelry that is currently on back order, call us and we can tell you when the item will be back in stock. Sometimes with the volume of orders we receive, an item may go out of stock before we are able to post a notification on the Site. If this happens, we will contact you directly to discuss possible options.

Data, including prices, may be inaccurately displayed on our Site due to system or typographical errors. While we make every attempt to avoid these errors, they may occur. We reserve the right to correct any and all errors when they do occur, and we do not honor inaccurate or erroneous prices. If a product's listed price is lower than its actual price, we will, at our discretion, either contact you for instructions before shipping the product or cancel the order and notify you of such cancellation. If the order has been shipped, you agree to either return the product or pay the difference between the actual and charged prices. Our prices are also subject to change without notice. We apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact one of our Diamond and Jewelry Consultants at [email protected] or 800-242-2728.

We do not negotiate prices on our products and all our prices are final.

I wouldn't hold my breath that they will sell you this stone for $8000 below retail.

I realize that a pricing error was possible from the post here, which is why I called a BN employed gemnologist (prior to purchase) to confirm that everything was ok with the stone and its price. He confirmed that it was a great stone with a great price. I trusted the expert employed by the company (BN) and I made the purchase. I told my future fiancé and family that it was official, finally, after trying to find the perfect stone for some time (not easy for a layperson - as far as diamonds go).

If the situation were reversed...and I was the second largest jewelry retailer in the world (like BN), then I would do something to keep the customer happy. I'm not saying they should sell for a loss. I understand that all people are fallible.

Blue Nile actually honored the original price. Best customer service that I've ever had!!! I will highly recommend the company from this point forward, obviously :)

Woah! Lucky you. Congratulations are definitely in order. In almost all cases similar to this, the vendor acknowledged the pricing error but stuck firm on the correct pricing.
