Hi, I saw a beautiful second hand ring today (actual picture of ring attached) with a 1.6ct estimated weight emerald cut diamond, graded D to F and PI - has a very small white spot right in the centre of the diamond. Set in 18ct white gold.
I can get it for a reasonable price however I am not sure...

My questions are:

1. It only has an evaluation certificate from Mark Nixon Jewellery Consulting (South Australia) - no lab report on the actual stone so the diamond information is from this jeweller.

2. What would expect this ring to be worth? Ball park?

Thoughts, ideas, opinions please

Thanks
Cindy

Did you look at the stone with a loupe to see all the inclusions? I would always assume jeweler grading is on the optimistic side. I could not find comps at 1.6, so I went to the 1.5 range and still couldn't find I1, which I think is our grading term for that clarity.

As you can see, F-H 1.5-1.6 SI2 ranges from $6600-9800 but I1 would be lower that SI2. I couldn't find any I1's on the PS search, either, as I doubt a cutter would choose emerald cut when they know the rough has significant inclusions. So take the lower end of that pricing and take off another $1000 (or maybe more?) for I1, and you'd be at $5600 USD. So I'd want the stone to be at a discount lower than that to even consider it. But I would be sure to see the stone with a loupe to be sure there isn't more than that one white inclusion. I generally do not look at emerald cuts below VS2 because the inclusions are so easily seen.

I did look at the stone however only with my eye. The only inclusion I could see was the small white one in the middle. I will re look at it with a loupe..
The ring is being offered for AU $4,125. I thought that was a good price for an approximate 1.6 (I would say 1.5ct)
I could not see any colour at all in the stone.

Will have another look at it.

Thanks for your help :)
