Tiny chip on new sapphire ring - Shall I ignore it?

Dear group members,

Recently i bought online a sapphire ring. I noticed that there is a tiny chip on the girdle of the sapphire stone.
Initially I thought to let it be as its hardly visible with the naked eye, but on a second thought i thought that it could result in more chipping in the future.

Do you think that this is acceptable and i should let it go or return the ring for repair?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

What a pretty ring! No worries, I own a few older sapphires....that is a VERY common thing to find. It looks like a natural, not a chip. That just means it was a "natural" part of the stones circumference in nature( which is rough and not always polished out with its little pits and things, like any rock). And, even if it's a 'chip', sapphires are 9 on the mohs, so not as hard as diamonds, and this happens with vintage stones that have been worn and loved. it can be polished out if it bothers you.
My great-grandmother's have all kinds of little marks. I don't care though!
The girdle on a sapphire is not as fine as on a diamond, and tends to be rougher anyway. It's part of their charm.
Also, I took a sapphire to be set recently, those little imperfections can identify the stone when it comes back to you (most of the time).

This is quite small. you could have it examined to ensure there's no internal fracture that threatens the integrity of the stone, but to be honest, you might be better off leaving it. It would need to be unset to even polish out, if thats even possible.

I'll be honest, I never loupe a set stone anymore. I did that a few times and thought I was going to lose my mind....

If I can't see it with my eyes (and I can see a hell of a lot) its not worth the extreme anxiety that it will cause me.

Are you generally happy with the appearance and price? For example, if I still loved it and it was $300 I’d definitely keep it. If I liked it okay, and it was $15,000, I’d probably return it.

No worries! Enjoy your gorgeous ring!

What a stunning ring! No worries

If it makes you feel better, and I’ve probably said this a million times, Elizabeth Taylor’s ruby ring had tons of facet abrasions when it went up for auction. It was still considered extremely valuable, even if it didn’t have the celebrity provenance. I’m sure the royal jewels have their chips too, so enjoy your stone and don’t lose sleep over the chip. :mrgreen2:

Thank you all for your kind replies. You definitely made me feel better about it and eased my mind!

Perhaps another question that you could help me with is the following.

I also noticed that the gemstone could be slightly loose. It does not shake or has audible rattles, but if i try to gentle push the stone from some angles with a wooden toothpick i can some times hear a minor 'clicking' sound, as if the stone is slightly moving.

It is a six prong setup (platinum ring) that is considered quite secure. So i am wondering..
Is it better to send it for a repair immediately or just use it and wait for some months until i notice that the prongs become looser?

Thank you all again! :)

I would have a good jeweler take a close look.
