I had a three stone diamond ring made. Picked out the stones and setting. Just got the ring Friday and I noticed the center stone (1 carat) is slightly tilted. It''s not much, but it''s something I can see. Is this really a big deal? Will it adversly affect the wear or durability of the diamond? I certainly don''t want to mention it to the jeweler if it''s nothing, so I need to know. I also don''t want to regret down the road not saying anything if I should. Thanks for your help.

It would bother me for sure, I would take the ring back and ask the jeweller to fix it. Welcome to Pricescope by the way!

Thank you so much. I love my jeweler so I didn''t want to offend him by getting too picky if it was unnecessary. I''ll go down today. Wish me luck!
Oh, thanks for welcoming me, by the way!

That would bother me as well. Good luck today!

One of the biggest problems that I have as a jeweler is making sure that all stones are mounted level. You are not being too picky to ask your jeweler to make sure that the stones are mounted properly. It seems he has earned your trust, so I expect that he will have no problems getting this minor repair taken care of promptly.

Welcome to our world.

OK. I went to my jeweler. He''s getting up there in age, so he isn''t the one that set the stones. He looked at it and said he will take it to the guy who set it but suspects we''d have to start all over. Is this really the case? I''m concerned that with starting over, other mistakes can be made like a tilted side stone, side stone at different heights, etc. I guess I just wasn''t prepared to hear that it would be this complicated.

Without good photos we can''t tell you how serious the matter is. Likely as not, the ring will be fixed and not made over. Maybe this is what should happen, but maybe not. I hate to see a brand new ring undergo repairs before it is even worn, but possibly the stone can be set straight with little more than a few pushes and pulls of the prongs by an expert. Too bad it was crooked to begin with, but now it has to be handled. Best of luck! Keep us posted and take pictures if there is an ongoing problem.

Honestly, because I mentioned that the tilt is slight, I don''t even think photos would show the problem. It only seems to be a problem on "corner" one prong. Oh, not that this matters in terms of resetting a diamong, but I don''t think I shared that the 3 stone ring is set in palladium.

I took the ring today. My jeweler talked to the jeweler who set the ring and they are now hoping it can be adjusted and done today. Honestly, I think he''s hoping it can get done today because he''s tired of dealing with me

I''m glad that jeweler is taking care of it for you... But I want to mention that sometimes diamonds look tilted in a setting when they are not. Look at the diamond from one side (finger through the hole view) and determine whether the diamond is tilted and if so in what direction, then flip the ring around and determine whether the diamond is still tilted in the same direction. Sometimes it merely looks tilted and it''s more an issue of the setting - this kind of thing drives me nuts! And as a result, drives the jewelers we work with nuts! The thing to realize is that all of this stuff is done by hand and there has to be some room for perfection in the imperfection... At least that''s what they (the jewelers) like to tell me

If I had a nickel for every time I heard this... "Todd, put down the flipping loupe! Those are for diamond grading, not looking at jewelry!" and they might be right! Could you imagine the look on my tailor''s face if the next time I picked up a suit from him I whipped out a magnifying glass to look at the stitching? Or if I ran over my next new car with a magnifying glass? They''d give me my own television show (hey Monk is in it''s last season!). I guess what I''m trying to say is that a diamond shouldn''t be set at an obvious tilt in the setting, but that it''s rarely going to be set at a perfect ninety degree angle either because the world of hand work is never perfect and someday I''ll realize that myself! (my bench jewelers had better never read this!)

Thanks, Todd! Yes, I was definitely concerned that I was being too picky. I could see the problem from the top, and the side. It was visible from the other side as well, but not quite as much. When I was looking at it from the side (btw, i mean front and back, not left and right), I was looking at the bottom point of the diamond to see if it was straight up and down, or slanted. It was slanted as well as the view across the top. Everyone I showed it to except for one person saw the tilt. some I told and had them look at the ring to see if they saw what I saw. Some I just gave the ring to and asked if they saw any issue with the center stone. My fear is that it comes back to me in some way worse than it was or the mount will look damaged now. Then what?

I''m already starting to wonder about the quality of my center stone. (my other thread - "Quality Round Brilliant?"). Though I did tons of research and tried to educate myself thoroughly, I didn''t find out about pricescope and HCA until I realized I had the tilted diamond issue. I''ve had the ring 1 1/2 wks. This could get messy, huh...

The ring is fixed and doesn''t look any worse for wear. I posted a few pics on the "Show me the ring" forum under "Just got a new ring". Thanks everyone for all your advice. I really appreciate it!

I''m glad that the jeweler managed to adjust the diamond in the setting and get it straightened out! Sometimes it''s a minor tweak... Off to check out the pictures you posted!
