Hello all,

I am currently looking to buy an engagement ring before christmas. My budget is roughly $7500. I do realise I could get a ring much bigger/better ring from blune nile/white flash/GOG/excel diamonds etc, but I have been checking out two solitaires on the tiffanys and hearts on fire websites.

1) Are the prices comparable between theese two brands for a similiar stone? (or is tiffanys higher?)
2) Would I be able to get a ~0.75 carat in my price range(if not, what would I be looking at)
3) Does anyone have(or can anyone find) have any pictures of either of these rings on an actual finger?

Does a 0.75 caratsolitaire ring look small on a finger? (pictures?)

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!!!

Here's the rings I was looking at:

The HOF Insignia ring also comes in a 6 prong semimount, which looks more like the Tiffany setting. I prefer it to the four prong, myself.

I have a HOF diamond and setting. The quality is exceptional, but it can be very costly. You can contact any HOF vendor and inquire about the price of a .75ct stone. Their pricing is standard throughout their vendors. Naturally, the price will vary with carat weight, color and clarity. The cost between Tiffany and HOF is fairly similar. If you look at the "under 1ct" thread in SMTR, you will see how different ct sizes look on the hand. A lot depends on the finger size

I just went to the local tiffany's.

I found a 0.71 C VS2 G tiffany's setting ring for $7300 (Canadian).

Is this a good price? I am not to far from the from the border. Should I take a trip to see what's available down there? Or would it be comparable?

I was just running some numbers, and it seems that a comparable ring would come in for around 4k on blue nile (2500 for diamond and 1500 for a platinum setting). The tiffany ring was very nice, now I'm just trying to determine if the blue box & setting are worth an extra $3300. Any thoughts? =-)

Definitly not worth it to me! I would spend the extra money on getting a bigger rock (but thats me). Dont know how
your girlfriend would feel.

I am not an expert, but I just went through this exact same internal debate. There were a few more variables for me, but it began with a question of do I go Tiffany''s or elsewhere.

I looked at it differently than you have thus far - I set my budget and then asked "what can I get for this?" The answer was about a .85c stone with a cut that would be certified by Tiffany but I would never really know if it was as good as they said, or a 1.04 c stone that I was confident was an excellent performer before it was set. I chose the latter. In the end, my ring would have cost me over $5000 more at Tiffany.

And, in truth, I could have saved a little more or gotten a slightly bigger stone if I had done everything online, but instead I used everything I learned here to negotiate with a jeweler. I was able to see the stone and evaluate it with my own eyes first, but I did end up paying probably a $500 premium for that.

All of that said - the most important thing is what is going to make her happiest. I thought about whether my GF would want the blue box or the bigger, high performing stone, and I thought she would choose the latter. But believe me, if I had truly believed the box was the most important thing to her, I would have paid for it in a second :)

For me it''s a no brainer. Buy online and get a bigger better diamond. It''s about size and quality. The brand name doesn''t do anything for me.

The brand means nothing to me. Unless you gf has told you "I want a Tiffany" then why would you spend more for it??

He knows he wants Tiff or HOF so I like ring #1 better than ring #2. Size on finger depends on how big her finger is. Would look big on a small finger. I wear a size 7 3/4 and I would prefer a larger stone over name. Don''t know anything about the price difference.

Actually, he now wants us to give our opinions of whether Tiffs is worth it

Absolutely NOT worth it. Unless it is the ONLY thing that will make her happy.

I went to a Hearts on fire dealer today. Man did these babies sparkle! They did not have my setting in stock, but I couldn't believe how nice the settings available were.

Anyways, he offered me the following:

0.61 F VS1 with a platinum setting for $7400 (Canadian). (The number of diamonds available in my price range were slim)

I am a little worried size appearance on a size 5.5 ring.

I'm going to go to a few local jewelers and will compare rings for my budget.

For those wondering, I have been dating my girlfriend for about 5 years. She has never asked for a tiffany diamond or any other high end cut. I'm pretty sure she was expecting a ring last year(oops!). I was hoping that opting for branding with the ring would offer more of a surprise(because I know she wouldn't be expecting it)

This is an approximation of the finger coverage.

If it were me, I would get this diamond:

http://www.whiteflash.com/hearts_arrows/Whiteflash-ACA-cut-diamond-2231027.htm

In this setting:

http://www.whiteflash.com/Engagement-Rings/Styles/Solitaire/Sierra-Solitaire-Engagement-Ring_1415.htm

The price is about the same when you factor in the PS discount and the exchange rate. BUT the diamond is 30% larger! I think that would impress her more than a branded cut

I am Canadian too and importing from the US is easy, all you pay is provincial and federal taxes.

If you go down the tiffany road be sure to post the cut info from a grading report - many times we helped people get the best cut quality - they are not all that tight on proportions.

How about surprising her with a larger-than-expected, non-branded diamond? I think that kind of surprise will last longer....

To the OP, definitely not worth it IMO. I would much rather get a non-branded but just as high quality (if not better) diamond online in an excellent Tiffany replica setting.

BEG - that is a very personal thing and if someone wants the Audrey hepburn Tiffany dream then that should be their choice without rational guilt trips

Thank you for your response, Garry. We all have different preferences and that should be acceptable. We do encourage getting the best cut possible, which I think is reasonable.

If she wants Tiffany, won''t mind having a smaller stone and you can afford it, it will make her happy and is worth it. and ~0.7 solitaire is in my opinion and beautiful, classic and elegant look.

Personally if I were purchasing a round though I would probably stick under 1ct (because that is my preference) but get an ACA or hand selected RB from a PS vendor. The quality of the stone would be on par, the price better and you could get just about any setting you wish. You could then spend the extra on a little holiday when you propose, splurge on dinner, etc.

I would personally rather have the Tiffany of the two (though again, please post stats on the Tiffany diamond to make sure that you are getting the best possible for that markup). As long as you are paying for the markup, might as well get the blue box.

Though if I can put in a vote for a trip to Cartier (again, post stats to make sure you are getting the best diamond possible), that would be my personal 'high end' choice (with the qualifier that I too would, unsurprisingly, go for a superideal H&A from a PS vendor-- Infinity or BGD would be my first choices-- around a carat if it were for me).

The OP explicitly asked for our opinions about Tiff etc. and has expressed his uncertainty about its value. Apparently his gf did not request a Tiffany dream. I don't see a problem with people giving him their answers, rational or not
