hello... i am very ignorant when it comes to diamonds and i realize that this question is very wide open, but i would appreciate any input anyone has... I am considering buying a Tiffany Ribbon Ring for my girlfriend. She has always dreamed about a "Tiffany" ring... unfortunately, I am not necessarily on a budget that i can afford Tiffany. On the webpage it says that this ring starts at around $2,900... i assume that is a tiny diamond, not great clarity, etc??? I am looking to spend around $10,000. What can i realistically expect for that price? She has always said that she would rather a clear diamond that wasn''t as big. With this budget, should i be looking elsewhere for a diamond or can i get a quality Tiffany ring for $10,000?

I think with that amount you can get something there. I do not think anything there is not nice. But, if you do your homework, I think you will see you can more for your money elsewhere. Do you have a cut, color, clarity guideline? I am NOT slamming Tiffany''s, I got two gorgeous rings there. And, you may end up there in the end...they have financing if that makes a difference (interest free?) But, I think it is worth your time to educate yourself, know what she has in mind and do some research first...good luck

Based on my recollection, I think I tried on a tiffany Ribbon ring with a center stone of about .75ct and it was about 10k.

It was LOVELY.
And the stone did not look too small. The design takes up some space and there are little diamonds on the "ribbon".

Nothing at Tiffany's is gonna look like crap or even bad. They've got quality stuff. Very classic and gorgeous designs. The only thing is you'll be getting a smaller diamond with lower specs than you would outside. You can buy a bigger diamond with better specs and even better cut for the same price outside. However, you won't get the Tiffany name and the setting usually has details that imitations just don't match.

To be honest, if you can live with the size of the stone, Tiffany's would be a good choice since most women absolutely love Tiffany's settings. Tiffany's won't have below VS2 and a certain color level and most people look at the size of the diamond first before they start looking at color and/or inclusions.

However, be certain she loves the "Tiffany" name and not just the Tiffany look. I dug deeper and discovered my wife (then g/f) was willing to sacrifice the name if I just found something similar looking. I got lucky there. If she must have a Tiffany ring for the name, then you're pretty much stuck.

If your girlfriend has dreamed of getting a ring from Tiffany, I think you should try to find a Tiffany ring for her. I get sick of all these people who say, "you can get more for your money if you buy from XXX instead of Tiffany" Everyone loves bashing Tiffany prices, but for some people the premium is worth it and the diamonds and rings are very beautiful.

I presume you know you will be paying a premium for the ring at Tiffany. But if she has her heart set on a Tiffany ring, that''s how you should go. Tiffany''s diamonds are perfectly lovely, and whatever you get her will be beautiful.

You might want to consider being able to buy a genuine Tiffany ring elsewhere, though -- for example, take a look at the Signed Pieces website:

http://www.signedpieces.com/item.cfm?item_id=3830 or

http://www.signedpieces.com/item.cfm?item_id=3984 or keep checking back. They get Tiffany engagement rings in frequently.

So my vote is, go for it -- either at Tiffany or somewhere where you can get a genuine Tiffany ring and diamond at a savings.

I second buying from Signed Pieces! Their stuff has a pretty high-turnover rate, so if you don''t see anything that speaks to you now just wait a bit. Something wonderful in your budget will show up soon!

(In fact I think there just was a run on their diamond rings, you just missed a lovely Lucinda.)

I posted in your other thread but will say it again here.
there are lots of different opinions here on Tiffany''s and the premium. One thing you can count on is they will provide you with a nice stone, maybe not the superideal best out there but it will be nice. they don''t go below I color or VS2 clarity, if that''s what your worried about. We don''t know much about their cuts which is one reason why folks prefer to shop elsewhere where you can get a ideal cut stone that may look better than a tiffany without the Tiffany Premium. 10K is a nice budget, if you GF must have that ring, I''m sure it would be fabulous. and if you get it...please, please come back with pictures. I would love to see handshots of that ring

Here''s something to think about if you want a larger rock, but a Tiffany ring..... Please don''t bash me for this one, but I actually think it''s a decent idea

.

I think the standard Tiffany solitaire knifes edge ring starts at $1,200.00 at Tiffanys. With your budget, your can probably get a 1.00 or so size rock with the remaining $8,800.00 you have left over. I''m no diamond expert but with that much money you should be able to get something larger than what you would get at Tiffanys . Just buy the smallest Tiffany Diamond on the setting that you like, and have them (I''m not sure if they would set someone else''s rock in place of theirs, you may have to tell them that you have enough money now to upgrade) set the stone for you, or have someone else set the stone that you bought with the left over money. That way you have the best of 3 worlds. You get:

1. The bigger diamond
2. The Tiffany ring
3. The little blue box to present it to her with. Everyone knows the little blue box

Interimmrent, I don''t think that would work. how could you set a 1.3-1.5 carat stone in a setting that holds a .25 carat stone? You would need a whole new head, and that would completely change the look of the piece. The hardest thing to replicate would be the head, not the knife edge setting. This would be nearly impossible with the ribbon ring from tiffany.
Sorry to call you out, but I think this is not very good advice.

I think as long as she understands she''d be getting a .75 ct. stone from Tiffany''s versus a 1.3 or 1.4 for the same money elsewhere, then go for it. It''s a beautiful ring! I''d love to see more pictures, too!

One thing to consider is whether or not you (or she) cares if a wedding band sits flush with the e-ring. Many women don''t like it if the 2 don''t line up and the ribbon ring may not be a good choice for a flush fitting wedding band. Also, I recommend that you at least check out what some of the PS vendors have to offer. If you have one near you that would be ideal. What part of the country are you in? PS members can recommend some great jewelers or possibly PS vendors in your area (if there are any). As everyone else has stated, you will have to sacrifice size at Tiffany''s. And keep in mind that most people will not know the ring is a Tiffany unless you tell them. Most people notice a large sparkly diamond before they notice a brand.

I was in a smililar situation. You don''t have to worry about clarity at Tiffany''s, they don''t go lower than VS2 in clarity and I in color. To give you an idea what you can get for 10,000:

If you go VS2 and I color you can get from .90 to a solid carat Lucida. If you go with the same clarity and color you can get the classic Tiffany''s knife edge round brilliant (1ct) for 9,500 to 10,000.

A way to save on Tiffany''s Rings is to purchase in a state with no Sales Tax. You save quite a bit on Tax. You save almost a grand, depending on your state. Let us know how it goes and don''t forget the pics. I hope everything works out for ya!

I don''t believe Tiffany''s sells just the setting. It''s been a while, but I remember asking myself.

No problem Pink, I''m certainly no expert at this kind of stuff but I thought maybe it would be easy enough to switch out the head/prong. My suggestion was really for the knifes edge ring which I would pressume to be easier to switch out the head, but youre probably right.

And to Codex''s point, youre right they dont sell the settings separately, and that is why he must buy the setting with the smallest stone possible which would be around $1200 bucks or something like that.

Maybe one of the jewelers on this board can chime in on how hard it would be to make the head change work.

EXCEPTIONAL summary, Codex!

I''m not a jeweler but can pretty much guess that this would ruin any value to an authentic Tiffany setting, even if it could be done without much difficulty. The beauty is not in the knife edge, there are plenty of those out there, the Tiffany solitaire''s charisma it''s it''s head. that is not easlily replicated as many vendors sell "close" but no one that i''ve seen is exact. Finding a jeweler to even attempt a copy may be hard if they have ethics b/c copying a patented design is illegal. If the name is important, keep the ring intact. IF not, buy one of the pretty good knock offs out there.
