Tiffany NY v Tiffany London

Hi,

I have read a reasonable amount of threads on here so dont need the online vs Tiffany debates to start again please I am just wondering what the price difference is between Tiffany New York and Tiffany London for diamond rings.. does anyone have any recent experience of this?

With prices changing all the time with both metals and diamonds, I''d just call and get quotes. That''s probably the most reliable info, in case no one responds.

Based on the price guidelines that used to be on the websites, it''s more than twice as expensive to buy in London, if you figure in the current exchange rate. This is based purely from memory, so it could be wrong, but I think the US site used to say that their 1 ct. stones in the Tiffany six-prong setting started around $7000. I believe the UK site said their 1 ct. stones in that setting started at £8000.

Considering $7000=(about) £3500, I''d without a doubt buy from a US Tiffany''s.

Shame the exchange rate has gone in the wrong direction (for me) the last couple of months, but its still pretty good compared to anything before the middle of last year

Yeah, tell me about it. I'm an American with US student loans, studying in the UK for the year. NOT working out money-wise very well, as my loans came out when the exchange was at its worst...

It''s based on memory, so it could be inaccurate, but the reason I''m reasonably sure it''s close to being right is that I remember thinking at first, "Oh, the price in London is just a bit higher than in New York" and being pleasantly surprised, and THEN realizing the London prices were in pounds and (with the current exchange rate), made the same exact ring almost three times as expensive!

So, on the exchange rate alone, I''d say to just go to NY and buy it there. Even with the VAT payable upon entering the UK again (for UK residents), it''ll save a TON of money.

I have noticed everything that costs in the US X Dollars..., costs X Pounds in the UK..., be it jewelry or clothes or.............???

Not everything, but a lot of things. The usual factors people bring up are US prices quoted dont usually include tax, but UK prices do (17.5%) and also import duty. The other factor is the exchange rate - people dont update their prices a whole lot and when they do they wont lower the UK price incase the fx rate changes back.

I am looking for a .75 carat Etoile - i am waiting for them to get back to me with some details of what they have.

There''s a huge difference between them. I live in Ireland and got my ring in the NY store. As we don''t have a Tiffanys here, I had to get my valuation from the London Tiffanys and it was £6000 more than what we paid for it. I would definitely get it in the NY store. You can get your ring and have a lovely holiday for less than the price of what you would pay at home.

I live in the US and just got some spec numbers today for .7-.8 ct low color(H) and clarity (VS2) Etoile Solitaires. Lowest price was $8400, highest was $11,000. So, yea, 7K will definitely not get you a full carat anymore at Tiffany, especially not in the Etoile! I don''t know if you''ve tried the Etoile in that stone size, but even for a person like me wo loves chunky rings, there''s something about the roundiness and thickness of the shank that isn''t very flattering on the hand. A half carat Etoile is just about perfect. Check out Kats'' ring on here if you get a chance. Just my two cents (I was trying some on yesterday!).

Really? That doesnt seem as cheap as others are making out..

For comparison there is one in London - .67 F VS2 with excellent cut for £5500 (about $11000)
and another .73 H VVS1 for £6000 (about $12000)

Do you have anything more specific?

My numbers were on the six-prong Tiffany setting, not the Etoile, but it's still twice as expensive. *shrugs* Your money, spend it where you want.

Ring specs I was given for the Etoile solitaire in Platinum:

.71 H VS1 $8700
.70 H VS2 $8400
.81 H VVS2 $11,200

Of course, I don''t have the details of the cut, but usually they are really good (perhaps not the *best* by pricescope standards!).

I have now spoken to Tiffany NY so have some comparisons, just for other people who may search on this later...

London - 0.67 F VS1 with excellent cut - about 5500gbp
NY - 0.63 F VS1 (unknown cut) - 7700usd which is about 4350gbp taking NY sales tax into account and about 5350gbp taking UK import duty and VAT into account (if you declare it) - also this is a slightly smaller ring and cut might not be as good.

So if you are totally honest and declare it, you are paying roughly the same.. otherwise you are saving a bit, but its not quite dollar to pound that it might have been at some point in the past.

when you consider you can get this 0.7 F VS1 for $3700! add $1000 for a platinum setting... and your talking £2800 all taxes paid! (nearly £2000 cheaper)


(sorry i know you didnt want a online/tiffany thing... but thats amazing!)

ps isnt the US tax rules something along the lines of if your staying out of state (say your hotel is in New Jersey) then you dont pay the NY sales tax... or you can get a refund... which would make the US ring about £4600 all taxes paid on entry to the UK

I have noticed a substantial difference between NY and London prices at Tiffany and many other stores.

On the sales tax: yes if he purchases the stone in NY and has it shipped to a low/no sales tax state he pays only those taxes applied in the state the ring is shipped to. Difficult to chase the ring all over the US though, and he needs some address that can actually receive the item.

Alternatively he could buy from a Tiffany store in a state that has no sales tax to start with. I think Oregon is like this, maybe other PSers know other states. He could call and have some suitable stones shipped to the non sales tax store.

Or, are US sales taxes subtractable from his VAT?
