Tiffany eternity ring advice: no longer fits after pregnancy

Hi - I hope I am in the right forum! I have a dilemma. I had always wanted a diamond eternity ring - and the symbolism was perfect when my husband and I decided to have a baby, so at 3 months pregnant he gave me one last Christmas...a Tiffany 2.5mm platinum full eternity. I wore it for all of two months when I swelled up like a balloon, developed pregnancy-related arthritis, and had to remove it. I'm almost back to my pre-pregnancy weight now, but the ring no longer fits (I can barely get it on over my knuckle, and when I do, I have an unattractive "muffin top" finger). I find the ring very uncomfortable now as well...it leaves a mark, and I can't even think about wearing it to bed due to night-time swelling. Is there anything I can do about this ring? The whole point is to be able to put it on and never take it off...but I really hate the way it feels. In fact, I never really liked the way it felt. It always felt too chunky, despite being a very thin ring. What can I do? Can Tiffany's help with something like this? I know a full eternity ring can't be re-sized...

I guess selling it and waiting past the childbearing years will be the best solution. I honestly do not recommend that young women buy full eternity rings for the very reason you are giving. The seven stone Tiffany rings can be sized but give the same look. I'd sell the eternity and get one of the seven stone rings. I doubt Tiffany would have any solutions other than having a new setting made, and that would probably not be worth doing. I hope this all works out for you!

I was afraid that would be the response :( If I sold it, do you have any idea what sort of loss we would take? I've had it for less than a year, and barely wore it...such a shame!! Where would I sell such a thing? Sorry - I'm such a novice with this stuff!

Does Tiffany do trade ups or buy backs?

If not, expect to lose 20-30% off of current retail if you sell it yourself. You can sell on diamondbistro.com, ebay, I do now I don't, etc.

Yep, you can resell on diamondbistro.com or ebay. Because Tiffany is a name brand, it is considered desirable on the second-hand market for those who want Tiffany but don't wish to pay full retail price.

I'm not sure if Tiff does trade-ups on such rings, but it's worth a shot calling to see what they say!

If you don't really like it, or never really did then sell it. If you love it, and would eventually like to wear it, wait a little longer. My hands did not change with my first two pregnancies, but boy did they ever with the third. I had more swelling in my hands than I did in my feet. But, now that I'm back to prepregnancy weight my fingers are back to normal.

HOW too small is it? An eternity can be resized, but it can't be much and it has to be by a very good bench. My mom had 2 stones added to her eternity. BTW - I don't think Tiffanys will do this kind of repair, but DO find someone good.

How much time has passed since your delivery? It's been 10 months for me, and between weight loss and the changing of the seasons, my hands are only just getting back to normal (well, one is - I'm crossing my fingers for the other). I've read about women's hands actually getting smaller a few years after they have their kids, too, so I wouldn't necessarily assume it'll never fit again.

That said, you want it to fit NOW, and from what I can tell, each Tiffany's location seems to vary in its policy: I've read of women getting rings resized by, like, three sizes, and I've read of them being denied completely. I'd go and ask the branch where you bought yours what they can do for you. And if they're unhelpful? As always, DS gives great advice. :appl:

Thanks, Circe! :))

silverlily, if you decide to sell, you can try listing on loupetroop.com (free) or diamondbistro ($1) and once you do, you can start a thread on the Pre-Loved part of this forum (under the Pricescope Cafe section). I'd list Tiffany pieces at 30% off retail and you might get anywhere between 50% and 70% of what you paid. As MC said, Tiffany pieces are desirable on the second hand market.

I'd try at ALL the Tiffany's in your area. I know in our area there are 4. If one said no, I'd just go ask the next. First do that, then if it doesn't work... consider DS's advice.

Re: Tiffany eternity ring advice: no longer fits after pregn

It took me about 2 years to get back to pre_pregnancy finger size and not until i lost the last couple of pounds, so its possible it may still.fit at some point. But if you've always found it uncomfortable, I'd try to sell it and maybe get a half eternity instead.

Re: Tiffany eternity ring advice: no longer fits after pregn

I had to have my eternity ring repaired and then resized later. The whole thing was a mess. I got a N-S baguette eternity ring-2.5 TCW set in platinium. Beautifully matched and channel set. I was pulling on something very hard and large with my ring on and a few days later I noticed I had bent one side of the channel, had lost about 3 baquettes and cracked and chipped 3 more! I had the missing diamonds replaced and saved two of the chipped baguettes and kept the least chipped in the ring. It was fixed 'OK'-some of the diamonds were not exactly straight (near the repair) and of course the chipped one stood out like a sore thumb. So I was not 150% as happy with my ring as before. Fast forward-40 pounds later-my ring no longer fits. I go to my jeweler's setter and he does not want to expand it. I told him I could not wear it anyway so whatever the fix is-it will be ok. He added a piece of platinium the same thickness of the ring so it matches the metal and is shiny like the diamonds. The diamonds are not as perfectly aligned near the 'patch' so I wear that inward but unfortunately the chipped stone is not near the patch. I still like the ring but if I had to do it all over again, I would get a 5 or 7 (2.5 TCW) stone ring.
