Hello. I just got a DBTY pendant for my 20th anniversary. I was excited to get it but....it looks a little small for my fat and short neck. Lol It is .38 and it looks smaller than I expected. I bought this pendant online... I live too far from any Tiffany stores and I know it is not a good time to travel anyway. Now, I regret my decision that I did not double check in person. Except for the diamond looking a little small, I like how it, but part of me is saying send it back and get a bigger one. Here is an information I have on this diamond and I appreciate if you share your opinion.
If you all think the stone itself is good, I might keep it. If you all think it sucks, I might proceed for exchange. Lol

Carat weight .38
Depth 61%
Table 59%
Crown angle 34.1
Pavillion angle 40.9
Symmetry Excellent
Measurement 4.65x4.67x2.84

I hope I put all the info you need...

I appreciate your help!

Does it have to be Tiffany? You could get a larger stone for the same Tiffany price tag by going with one of the super ideal vendors and have the best cut out there! Win win!

@Mountain mama - I’m going to guess the Tiffany necklace had to be more than $4k as the largest one that I could find on the website is .22 for almost $2k. Look at this beautiful stone from Whiteflash that’s .80ct and 6mm so quite a bit larger than the Tiffany stone! This is just one example but there are tons of more options...
In this setting and voila! Much bigger and better bang for the buck! https://www.whiteflash.com/diamond-pendants/verismo-diamond-pendant-1399.htm

Yes give us a budget and we can get you a larger pendant for your neck! It it has to be Tiffany I would choose something else.

I agree that you could probably get a larger diamond that is on par or better than the Tiffany diamond for less or about the same cost factor. Sometimes with signed pieces you're simply paying for the name.

I agree with others that Tiffany is pricey, but I cant find any bezels that completely match the tiffany ones. Plus, Tiffany uses spreadier stones, so, while not the most ideal cut, they look bigger, and lay flatter on the neck. I have three tiffany dbtys, and I love them all!! Would you consider getting a pre-owned one? I'll bet you could get a much larger stone for the same price, if you went the pre-owned route! ;-)

Agree with @meesmom - Tiffany’s DBTY bezels are the best mass-produced station bezels. BGD, WF, IDJ, etc. - in this price range noone’s bezels are as perfect as Tiffany’s. Leon Mege, Victor Canera, etc. certainly could make bezels that way but you wouldn’t be saving anything going to them! I think Tiffany’s bezels are also better than Cartier’s, by the way.

You could certainly get a larger stone by going to a different vendor. How much do you personally value the Tiffany brand and the Tiffany ideal bezel?

That style bezel probably won't be comfortable with a larger diamond and it wouldn't sit right. So if you want that style, you probably can't go much larger. If you want a solitaire diamond pendant that is larger, I'd suggest another type of setting. My studs are from Whiteflash, and I definitely value the larger size over the Tiffany brand for a classic diamond piece.

However, I think you should definitely send it back since it sounds like you have doubts about it. Then you can take more time to decide what you really want.

A couple of points of view:
I understand the cache of Tiffany and that the giver and the receiver get some added value.
So All those recommending a company with almost always better diamonds is not always relevant if wearing Tiffany makes people feel better.
However from a design point of view - the setting is very light and has little chance of not turning upside down and or rotating around the neck. The bezel covers some of the diamond- the smaller the diamond the larger the percentage that is covered. And finally I am not a fan of Mickey Mouse ears - I always prefer the jump-ring on the bezel to be oriented 90 degrees from Mickey to Bunny ears.

But these are personal preferences and my comprehension of what Tiffany has to offer by way of value adding and any of the changes I suggest loose that cache!

I have to agree with this. Tiffany bezels are pretty perfect. I’ve had BGD, IDJ and Whiteflash bezel bracelets and/ or rings and they are nice, but Tiffany’s bezels are perfectly round and even. But I’m also super picky.
I’ve been unsuccessfully looking for a second hand Tiffany ruby by the yard bracelet forever because I would prefer to have theirs than have one made for precisely this reason.
I decided to just get two Dbty style bracelets from Blue Nile instead knowing that I could return them if I wasn’t happy. I have to say I just received both bracelets and they are on par with my Tiffany bezel stuff. I’m shocked!
It’s your 20th anniversary and if you’ve always wanted it, then go for it! But certainly if you feel this one is too small then return it until you find one that’s just right.

yes, of course tiffany holds a certain draw. it is a prestigious american jeweler with tremendous history and heritage. a signed tiffany piece is really more than the sum of its parts.

if you have always coveted and longed for a tiffany elsa perretti dbty pendant, then go for it. the bezels are handmade and are very finely done. i can attest to this

some are a bit less concerned with the prestige of the brand. they are into technical precision of the round brilliant and have every intention of maximizing resources spent to get the most brilliant diamond at the best price

please do bear in mind that the larger the diamond, the culet will be, more likely, to be uncomfortable with the tiffany perretti bezel.

if i recall, i found it unbearable at about .75 carat weight

whichever route you choose, your happiness and 100% satisfaction is most important

Agree that it basically comes down to what you value in the necklace so it’s a call only you can take. There aren’t really any right or wrong decisions! If it’s size, then going with a near super ideal (so <2 HCA, good ASET etc and having it set by a good bench or the stone vendor). If it’s stone performance, then super ideal (WF, CBI, BGD etc). If it’s the brand, then Tiffany (either the one you already have or a bigger size). Similarly for any other consideration you might have once you figure out what is most important.

If you do decide to go bigger (and unbranded) and it becomes uncomfortable to wear, you could perhaps look into a modified setting - not sure what it’s called but it’s like a basket setting with a bezel on top. That will prevent the culet from chafing your skin. It’s not the DBTY setting though but it could look similar from the top? Not sure if you’d like that but it’s an option.

Good luck deciding - and congratulations on your anniversary!

Hello! Thank you very much for your thoughts! I read and reread all of your replies and I learned a lot from you all. =)2

I understand that Tiffany gets pricey because of the "name". I own some pieces from Tiffany and I can't help being impressed with their craftmanship. That said, I am also a "Whiteflash" girl. Lol
I bought an engagement ring and I also had them semi-custom made a pair of earrings. They are absolutely wonderful to work with and I am planning on contacting them for the next project near future.
Before I bought a pendant from Tiffany, I actually "studied" bezel settings from several vendors such as WV, BGD, Cartier etc. And, I agree with meesmmom,kayla17 and yssie. I can't find anybody else who make good bezels like Tiffany does. (it's just my opinion) I know you don't like "Mickey" ears, Garry H, but there is something "magical" about Mickey. ;)2
I will stick with Tiffany this time. I emailed Tiffany this morning to ask for the bigger carat option. I don't want too big though...I am thinking to go up from .38 to around .48ish? What do you all think? Does it make a significant difference? Big Fat Facets, you are right about the culet poke. Even .38 pokes my neck every now and then. It's not really hurting me much but if I go too big, it gets uncomfortable.

Again, thank you very much for your posts!

I think going up .10ct should be noticeable. My plafinum one is .41 and a friend has a .5, and i totally see a difference!! :)

Oh and i've heard that, for a fee, tiffany will add a basket to the back if the culet bothers you. Ive seen it, it looks very discreet and shouldnt change the look of the necklace.

Kayla I’ve got the single station ruby CBTY and I have to say - I love it!! I‘ll get the five station one of these days. Every other vendor’s ruby melee errs pink/purple - my Tiffany band and my Tiffany CBTY are the only ones that are a sparkly and true *red*. I want sapphire and emerald station bracelets as well, and I’m going to skip trying to save and just get Tiffany CBTYs - I know the melee will be true to the colours I expect. Diamonds are a lot more flexible, I think - good diamond melee is a lot more common!

ETA: I do think there’s significant variance in the melee quality used in sterling CBTY pieces, but IMO gold and platinum have consistently good melee.

I can honestly say that for me, the Tiffany brand doesn’t have much cachet. I know this won’t be a popular opinion but I don’t see Tiffany as a truly luxurious brand the way I do VCA, Cartier, Graff, etc. I like a number of their designs, and I think they make them best, so I buy from them - buying for originality and quality and consistency, not blue box appeal.

I’m jealous! I seriously want one but refuse to pay full retail. I do see what you mean about the ruby color variation. I have ruby bands from Beverly K and I always compare everything to them bc to me they are the perfect ruby red.
The one I purchased from BN is just a tad too pink for me. I purchased their garnet one as well and I like the garnet one so much better. I’m probably going to return the ruby one. I’m sad. I wanted this search to be over.

OP sorry for the threadjack!!!

I just went through this for my wife’s 25th anniversary pendant. Tiffanys is nice but imo you purchase a RB diamond for fire and sparkle, I would want the best diamonds I could purchase from the super ideal retailers here. My goto has always been Whiteflash. My wife’s Pendant, WF ACA .825 CT F SI1 6mm in a Tacori halo setting, it’s stunning and was $5800. The halo gives the look of a 1 ct diamond. Settings are important but all anybody tells her is how incredible her diamond is and how much sparkle it has, no comment about the setting. Just my thoughts, below is the actual pendant, good luck!

I’m really intrigued by your comment about BN’s bezels - I’m looking at their site right now... ::)

@Mountain mama sorry if our side conversation is more distracting than helpful!! I’m a longtime WFer too - I observed a couple days ago that my relationship with WF is the longest I’ve ever had! It predates my marriage - which is actually third-longest, my Wusthof habit takes second place

@Mountain mama, I agree with you there is nothing quite like the Tiffany version. I have the platinum 0.75ctDiamonds by the yard stones are 0.15ct each. I love mine and wear it most days. Do what makes you happy.
