Hello everyone,

First time poster, but have spent a large number of hours on this forum learning from past topics! My partner recently proposed to me while away for our anniversary. He decided to do so without a ring, instead purchasing a gorgeous necklace with an engagement ring on it. He said he wanted me to design a ring that I wanted and made me happy. He had apparently for months been contemplating the direction he wanted to head with the ring. Purchase it before proposing, or allow me to choose the ring! I am very happy he allowed me to choose the ring that I wanted, as I am a bit fussy in the designs I like.

Originally the plan was to use my nanna's diamond to create a design I wanted. The past two weeks I spent looking in jewellery stores trying to decide on a design I liked. I finally made an appointment with a designer and got the diamond examined. It was extremely disappointing to hear that it was low in almost all the C's, in particular the cut. After a weekend of discussing it with the fiance we decided not to use the diamond. We are on a pretty strict budget, as he is trying to save for a house on his own (I am still at University) and spending a fortune on an engagement ring isn't an option.

He said last night though (completely out of nowhere), I know you have always dreamed of having a tiffany engagement ring, if you want to have one you can get one..BUT you have to realise the diamond will be smaller than if we bought the diamond elsewhere and designed our own engagement ring. I haven't been living under a rock and certainly realise that tiffany is ALOT more expensive than the other options out there, but the setting is absolutely stunning and I am yet to see a replicia look identical.

Now my question: I am looking at a minimum of .50 carat diamond. Our price range is around the 5,000-6,000 mark. I am interested to know what I could pick up carat wise with that price range. Over .50 carat would be amazing! I know that tiffany's have a certain range they stick too in relation to colour and clarity, so I know either way I will be getting a good quality diamond.

What what are the rough prices?

Can you share the details of the stone you have? A beloved pricescope vendor, Brian Gavin, will re-cut some stones if they're good candidates for it.

I agree with MissStepcut. I've read in many threads that Brian Gavin can recut a diamond resulting in better cut grade. I'm confused regarding the setting. I've seen many Tiffany style settings that are very much like the real thing. Which setting specifically are you looking at?

How wonderful that he proposed and is letting you have input into the ring!!!

I sincerely would get a Tiffany reproduction and an ideal cut diamond. The Vatche U113 is the best Tiffany repro as far as I have seen. Here are some pictures of it (with very large stones!):

Thanks everyone kindly for there inputs. I am from Australia, so not sure how Brian Gavin will be able to recut my diamond is the only thing.

That reproduction is gorgeous, unfortunately I am not sure how my boy feels about buying overseas and online. I think we would like to be able to see the product up-close and personal to ensure it's money well spent.

Does anyone know roughly the cost of different carats at Tiffany's. I have booked in for a consultation, but a rough guide would be ideal!

The fact that you're in Oz will unfortunately make it more expensive I fear. For a basic bare bones setting (just the metal band) and a .5 ct stone, the starting price here in the states is $3,500 pre-tax. I've read that the mark-up abroad is great (on top of the fact that Tiffany is greatly marked up already).

I just went to the Australia Tiffany site and if you go to the ring you're looking at, you can type the size and get an estimate. The same bare bones metal setting with a .5 ct stone starts at $4,400 AU.

That's my understanding too. So I think OP is better off buying the diamond and setting separately. As for buying online, there are many ladies and gents here who do everything online. I'm sure they will chime in to reassure you of the process.

yeah i'll chime in! i'm actually from australia too and let me say that buying from the US will be problem free IF you stick to reputable vendors that people often talk about on PS - brian gavin, whiteflash, jamesallen, union diamond, good old gold, eternity diamonds etc. if you use the search tool you'll find lots of recommendations to help ease your mind. plus the bonus is some of these vendors offer a discount to PS members. paying with credit card also will provide some protection in the worst case and very unlikely situation that something goes wrong.

in that price range you'll be able to get closer to 1ct (depending on what color and clarity you're after - i'm thinking G-H SI1-SI2)

Have you considered a second hand T&CO? T&CO can make it look partically new.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations. I'll continue my research, it looks like that unfortunately I won't be getting my engagement ring till after christmas or the new years! Ah well, all good things come to those who wait. I'll look into all those!

In relation to second hand tiffany rings, where would I begin the search for that? Are they able to resize the band or would I need to get my size?

Hi everyone,

Spent the last hour googling the replicias people recommended! Really LOVE the SuperbCert Tiffany Replicia and from the reviews it seems everyone is happy with it.

In terms of finding a Diamond, where is the best place to do so? Any advice?

What's the best and largest diamond I could get keeping in the 5,000-6,000 AUD price limit (includes setting).

Do they do overseas shipping and if so if it comes and I am not satisfied is there a return policy?

The Vatche U113 is probably the best Tiffany repro now. We have been discussing it recently on other threads. Bliss just got her diamond reset in the Vatche version and it is gorgeous:

Both Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash carry Vatche settings, so I would look for a diamond there. I don't know your exchange rate, but I posted potential diamonds for you above.
