I actually have a separate thread about the stone I purchased from GOG here: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/1-01ct-ideal-f-vs2-gia-strong-blue-advice.76906/

So far, I am extremely pleased with their customer service and the breadth of information provided directly to me about my particular stone. I strongly suspect I will be equally pleased with the product when it arrives tomorrow!

I think I have generated enough buzz amongst our friends about her designer ring and how it may take a little extra time to be crafted that they will be equally excited when it arrives. Every one of our friends and family I have spoken to (I''m getting a little more liberal talking about it now as it is only a week-ish away and they are involved in the proposal) has expressed their support and the fact that they think "S" will be ecstatic to hear the story and receive a special (not cookies cutter chain store solitaire) even if it means having to be without her ring for a little while and trading in the one I put on her finger for a finished product. Wish me luck =)

I do wish you luck, but you have just hit on the biggest problem I see with your plan. Sending a stone to Mark Morrell might mean she has no engagement ring for a month! If you are getting married this summer, she really won''t have much time to enjoy her ring. I know I wouldn''t have wanted to part with my ring for a month after getting engaged. My suggestion would be to let her pick a setting locally that could be ordered and then set for her in a day or so.

I really do see your point. My feeling now is basically that we''ll have time to talk about that after next weekend when we can be more open about plans (it''s a semi-surprise). I think I could work something out with Mr. Morrell so that he could have the ring essentially completed based on dimensions I could provide ahead of time, and then he would receive the stone when he is ready to set it in the ring. I would want him to set the stone, because I understand he does quite a bit more than the average jeweler may offer in terms of final polishing/etc after setting. Despite what I''ve read about having to send the stone through an independent appraiser (his policy) I think that could be done in well under a month.

Bottom line is I''m very much in love and I will do whatever it takes to make sure ''S'' has the best and stays happy. If that means a place holder ring that''s what I''ll do. If I have to find a place holder stone maybe that can be arranged. I don''t know. We share a very strong faith in God. It is our belief that if we pray earnestly and have faith in God to provide direction and opportunity, we don''t really need to stress out about the details. The venue, the photographer, and many other details have sort of fallen in our laps. I''m sure the answer to my ring dilemma will be no exception.

Overall, I haven''t seen any ring locally that caught my eye the way Tiffany, Morrell, and SuperbCert have. I have little reason to believe a local designer would be much faster than a remote one.

I do genuinely appreciate you helping me think this through though (everyone really).

I know this is a little late, but I just got a Tif and it''s a .91 (so measurements are the same as a 1ct) and it was around 9k without tax. The magic number of 1ct is in the over 10k range.

James, you and S sound like a very special couple, and it is refreshing to hear such an unselfish and loving attitude on your part, which I am sure is rooted in your faith. Many blessings to you both! (And please come back with pictures of the ring!)

(Just wanted to explain that most jewelers carry designer settings which they could order in her size and set on site. That is what I meant by a quick turn around. But the way you are approaching it, you are allowing her to choose what she loves, and that is the absolute best way to do it!)
