Ok.. So I have the other post going about three stone vs solitare but now I am looking/talking around based on what the jeweler told me.. My girlfriend said she wanted platinum on the ring and went on and on about platinum.. i dont think she has any clue why she wants platinum and i dont mind spending the extra on it.. but when i was talking with the jeweler he mentioned that with three sided pave the platinum will tend to lose shape and have bigger chance for the side diamonds to fall out.. well maybe not lose shape but i guess from wear it will "move" or something.. one reason i was leaning towards platinum is because of the yellowing that white gold will get.. the jeweler said he will make the ring in whatever i want but said that each (platinum and gold) has its pros and cons.. just curious what the overall opinion is for platinum vs white gold with a three sided pave..

Honestly, I would *strongly* recommend going with your jeweller's recommendation on this - whatever that is.

The one thing we can say for sure is that 3-sided pave makes a ring more delicate and likely to deform than another without... so letting method of manufacture, alloy, and your craftman's skills and preferences dictate the choice becomes even more important!

I do agree with this but I'm also on the fence as I really dislike redipping white gold rings. I much perfer the patina effect that PLAT gets over time vs. the yellowing. You are sort of between a rock and a hard place as there really is no good answer on this one. If you intended really wants PLAT I would ask why just in case she DOES know the difference that happens with the metal colors over time and has preference. Does your jeweler have pave rings in WG and PLAT you could look at?

unfortunately no.. seems as though three sided pave with three stone is not very "common" to carry.. everywhere i have gone i have found it difficult to find what im looking for which is what led me to "custom" make the ring.. i think she has always said platinum because she feels as though its more durable.. the jeweler told me that you have good and bad with both.. white gold will yellow and have to be polished and whatnot.. the platinum will scratch easier and possibly lead to more of the pave diamonds falling out.. he said that to polish the white gold is a lot easier then having to deal with platinum but he said it was my choice.. so confusing.. gonna have to make a comment to her and see why she wants platinum so badly..

You don't polish gold - it will wear away. You just re-dip white gold in Rhodium. You *can* polish platinum, as it will just move around instead of come off, if that makes sense.

Who are you having this done by? I'd be leery of a local place that has no samples to show you. This sounds like a very intricate project... and that's why you need to keep your FI's lifestyle in mind as well. If she is very active she may be more likely to lose pave stones, it will need to be babies to some extent (make sure she knows that...).

I'd highly consider VC / SK / LM as they are used to working with pave, and they'll do a superb job. The last thing you want is sloppy pave.

There are alloys of wg that are very white without plating (my current ring is palladium-wg) - but those will have their pros and cons too, I'm sure!

I do agree w/ efc - you'll want to make sure you choose a vendor who has experience doing this sort of pave work well. Sloppy three-sided pave IS the last thing you want to deal with!

I'm pretty sure if you go with pave PLAT is the prefered choice. Or at least I thought it was :?:

And OP if you want the honest truth worry less about what metal you are using and more about your jeweler. If he/she can do pave well then you have nothing to worry about regardless what metal you choose. If they are warning you about diamonds popping out which can happen then I would wonder how skilled they are at actually mastering it. Pave is an art form and it is not created equal-point blank.

If their pave is popping out then that is a reflection of how well then can do it. I would not work with your jeweler until you have SEEN how well he/she can do pave. It does not have to be a 3 sides pave 3 stone, just some examples. I would also ask how often they have people bring back rings because of melee falling out. With my pave ring I have laid down 3,000sqft of sod, done dishes, just in general been hard on them- but they were extremely well made and I never had an issue with them. That is a reflection on the master craftmans who made them. Yes pave is delicate but you shouldn't expect to loose diamonds at every left turn.
