Hi everyone, I have a question regarding thread manners/rules. I don''t mind when people thread-jack my topic, but I''m sure there are others who are bothered by it. What is the proper etiquette when you are posting on someone''s thread? I''ve seen people apologize for "threadjacking", and they stay on topic. I often find myself replying to someone else''s post in the original poster''s thread. My intention is not to be rude, but simply to follow-up with that person.

1) What are the thread rules and manners?

2) What is threadjacking?

3) When is it acceptable to go off-topic with someone who is not the original poster?

Thanks! I just don''t want to be "that" person.

1) What are the thread rules and manners? It depends, basically play it by ear. For example a RT thread, if a new poster has a query of their own it is always best for them to start their own thread to preserve the integrity of the original poster's thread. RT threads are more for info and educational purposes so we try to keep those running in that manner. Of course if we are discussing a diamond topic and anyone wants a particular explanation, then that is fine to drop in and ask for one - no problem at all!

2) What is threadjacking? Basically dropping into a thread and asking questions which aren't related to the original topic.

3) When is it acceptable to go off-topic with someone who is not the original poster? It really depends on the thread, with Hangout topics or more every day type threads, sometimes a threadjack can evolve as banter in a real life conversation does, we have had some kicken threadjacks happen in that way!!! Hehehe! Also if you have a query which is related either to a poster in a thread that you want to get their attention quickly, perhaps to page them to look at another thread, that is acceptable. As you know, manners matter here so as long as any thread diversion is approached in that way ( as you do anyway!) then you won't go wrong.

Thanks! I just don't want to be 'that' person.

Thanks Lorelie! I felt bad because I thought I completely butchered Drewbot''s "EBay" thread, and I even named his diamond for him. But at least I stayed "on topic"!

NO NO NO - you did fine! That is a great example of a fun and apt threadjack!! Drew made it plain he had posted the diamond in that spirit, so you have nothing at all to worry about!!!! Your instincts were spot on and furthermore you were discussing the diamond so theoretically it wasn't even a threadjack!

Platinumrock, I don''t think most people are too bothered by thread jacking. The only time I think threadjacking is really "heinous" is when it''s a SMTR - I''ve seen times where a newb gets confused and posts their own pics in someone else''s thread. It actually happened once in a thread of mine, and a couple posters were really nice and just said to the new person "Please post your lovely pics in a new SMTR thread. We''d love to see!"

PSers are pretty patient people I think - and ditto to the previous comment that threadjacks just happen like a they would in a normal convo.

A lot of times, you see new threads that are spinoffs of another poster''s topics. For example, there were a couple recently where posters had specific threads about inlaw horror stories, so then a thread popped up that was "tell me what your ILs are like" - etc. Sometimes one thread makes you think of a question, instead of asking it in that thread, you can start a new one where people can answer a general question you have rather than take away from an OP''s original, specific question about a certain situation.

Replying to someone else''s post is absolutely fine - that''s why we have the quote button! I often agree with what someone has said, want to add something to a response, reply to a comment...that stuff is all A-OK I think.

Elmorton, thanks for your thoughtful response. And I completely agree, sometimes threadjacks (or sometimes not so nice) make threads more fun and entertaining. They also bounce off great ideas for new threads.

Now I feel awful. And you know what''s sad, Lorelei? Lopsie will be relisted on that Vendor''s sight, will most likely be misrepresented, and will be sent back again. Poor thing will be passed around.

Do you think the seller will accept a much lower price?
