If you that, then I dont think you will be happy with such a thin ring Demelza...You really dont see what cut the stones are at that size, at least not without glasses!Date: 7/14/2008 8:45:47 PM

Surfgirl -- What you say makes sense. I certainly don''t expect to see much detail in each individual stone, but I want it to be obvious that they''re step cuts and not princess or radiant cuts.

MrsS -- Yes, I will be at my parent''s house on Monday to receive the ring. In fact, I won''t leave the house until it arrives. Can''t wait!
Pixley -- My Maytal should be ready next Friday. We have tentative plans to meet in the afternoon for me to pick it up. I''m so excited!! When does your mom arrive with your ring?

Another update: The ring arrived today safe and sound. It's very pretty. The stones are quite lively and you can definitely tell they're step-cuts. I like it a lot.
That said, I'm not 100% thrilled with the quality of the workmanship. The problem is relatively minor, but there are 2 or 3 stones that don't sit flush with the others. There's no space between the stones, but they look almost like they're slightly sunken in. Does that make sense? It's really not very noticeable in normal lighting conditions, but I saw it fairly easily under close scrutiny (actually, you can sort of see it in the blown up picture that Pearlman's took on the first page of the thread). I'm a little surprised by this because XIV Karats has a very good reputation. I realize it's not really a big deal -- more of a mind-clean issue than anything else -- but I will ask Maytal what she thinks when I see her on Friday. I will also see how the ring looks with my emerald cut and make a final decision.
Dani -- did you notice this?
What do you guys think? Any thoughts?
Is it really the quality of the workmanship necessarily ... or perhaps just the current "condition" of a well-worn 2nd hand ring?Date: 7/22/2008 12:03:29 AM

Agreed here as well--I have a thin, channel set sapphire band from the 1920''s and the platinum has been nicked, the overall shape has gone from circular to oval (from decades of wear) and the stones are typical of those found in a hand-made ring...they aren''t all at the same level, either. It''s these exact traits that made me fall in love with it. When you buy an estate piece you usually fall in love with those traits that give it character and you don''t necessarily expect the perfection of modern machine-made rings.Date: 7/22/2008 9:45:26 AM
