I was thinking of a setting similar to this

Any comments on white vs yellow gold? White seems much more popular but I am thinking she might be more of a classic gold...
Total budget is around 3000-3500.

Just wanted to say an overall thanks. I had actually already bought a ring. 1ct princess but un-certified  from a big brand store; returned it after a lot of reading from this site.

thanks :)

A few questions.

Does she have a pinterest account? If so, please go to it and see what rings she has pinned and link us.

Has she asked for a princess?

What color metal is most of her current jewelry?

No she doesn't have a pinterest account :wall:

Most of jewlery is gold/rose gold. Which is why I was thinking yellow gold, but I am not too worried about the setting. It wouldn't be a too big of a hassle for me to end up putting the diamond in a different setting.

Along the same lines, she hasn't asked for anything specific in the diamond. I know she is expecting more of the surprise style. She commented on another couple who picked out the ring together.

Princesses show color at points, so personally I'd stick to I or better. And they also face up really small for their weight. So I would not personally recommend you go that route with a small budget.

Princess:

Cushion:
http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/1.02-carat-j-color-vs1-clarity-sku-602930 This is a REALLY nice cushion. It's a 6mm stone. Which means that next to the 5.3 princess it is very large. And it will face up whiter than the J princess.

I really think that with your budget, the cushion is the better choice. Especially since it is up to you.

As for settings, this is the one I recommend if you want something out of the common run. It says it takes a princess, which means a cushion will be fine in it. http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-twisted-pave-engagement-ring-item-53319

As for metal... with few exceptions most women right now prefer white metal. But if she wears a lot of yellow toned jewelry, then she could be the exception. But if she doesn't... I think white metal is safer.

Well, no. the cushion will appear bigger because it has the curved corners.

But yes, I do mean dimensions. https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/the-round-vs-square-size-debate-what-do-you-see.148598/\

That cushion is REALLY lovely. I would recommend you put it on hold ASAP. It's no cost and no obligation. And it will ensure that lurkers don't snatch it.

ETA: Also the cushion is a full carat stone. That's a nice milestone to hit for a ring. Not required, of course, but if you can hit it and not compromise too much (and that stone lets you do that), its a nice one to hit. Especially given the budget.
