Thoughts on this OEC

A friend of mine has asked me for some advice on their engagement ring. They are looking at these two OEC. I don’t have a lot of experience with them. Is anyone able to tell if these are cut well? They’re not chasing perfection, but they do want it to be reasonably well cut.

I’m concerned that the facets under the table appear to all be off when viewed head on. The crown is shallow compared to what I personally would be looking for and the table is a bit larger than I would be wanting too. The 1.90 also has some clarity issues that worry me. I think the inclusions aren’t going to worry my friend but I can see a lot of straining.

Edit: just realise I still have a trade label on my profile. I am no longer in the trade and haven’t been for quite some time now.

These are not OECs. The proportions do not reflect old cut parameters at all. They are just weirdly cut MRBs. There are some vendors selling lab diamonds that approximate old cut proportions. Alex Park on IG. Maybe people can recommend others.

For me I don’t like the “star” pattern OEC as much as the “flowery” type cut… but it’s whatever they like! Just mentioning it in case they don’t know there’s another option

I find the India vendors tend to cut the stars … and I just call them that it's not an official name or anything lol

It’s personal preference of course, but this is an alternative facet pattern for OEC

This. The ones linked above are not good examples of lab OECs.

Asking for education here - pattern aside, are all the “star/petal” facets supposed to go dark at once in these magnified videos? Is it from the proximity of the camera?

Oh yeah I didn’t even look at the report I just looked at the videos! I didn’t even notice that 57% table

I know when I was ordering my old European cut there were a few parameters:

Table size: less than or equal to 53 percent

Crown angle: greater than or equal to 40 degrees

Lower half facet length: less than or equal to 60 percent

Culet size: slightly large or larger

When the central facets all go dark it’s usually obstruction or some other indication of poor cut. It’s a general issue with old cuts because of the typical angles. But in nicely cut examples of this kind it doesn’t happen. There are 8 main facets under the table and ideally they turn off and on independently so the area looks lively.

This. When the facets turn off and on separately it's like a twinkle ligjt show

Most of the really beautiful lab OECs (in fact probably most lab diamonds full stop) are cut in Surat, so it's more a matter of being discerning as to who you buy from, whether that be directly from India or through a third party dealer, elsewhere than it being a general characteristic of vendors from any particular part of the world.
