Thoughts on this JA diamond

The Very Good cut rating bugs me a little bit, considering the first thing people advise is not to sacrifice on cut. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it might have to do with the pavilion angle, which might lead to the stone going dark under the table if it's viewed closely or if it's in the person's shadow (called obstruction I think...I'm still learning myself)

Stick with excellent cut only. It is too deep (stay at 62.3 or less) and the girdle ranges from thin to thick (girdle should be thin, medium, or slightly thick or a combination of those).

Try to stay around these for the angles:

crown 34-35.0

pavilion angle: 40.6-41.0

Are you looking for a stone that will display lots of colored light? I strayed from GIA EX as well because I was looking for a specific type of light return. My stone was a candidate for AGS0 and I believe yours is as well. If you are looking for lots of colored light then I think that it may be worth asking for an ideal scope image for this stone and two others (JA will provide IS and gemological review for three stones for free) with more 'ideal' proportions and see how the images and gemological review come back.

BTW I responded to your question about my setting, but in case you didn't see it, I have the .32 french cut pave. =)

I don't think it can be a candidate for AGS0 with that girdle and depth. It is fine to look at high crown angle diamonds, but I would absolutely not consider a depth that makes a stone face up smaller. And a thin to thick girdle just isn't a sign of the best cut stones.

I just wanted to add that I got A LOT of help from a few veteran PS members when I was looking for my stone. Yssie in particular has lots of experience in these less traditional type cuts as she prefers them too (though perhaps with a slightly smaller table?) Dancing Fire and Dreamer were both helpful in my search as well, and you may find their insight very helpful. If you were interested you could page any of them (by starting a new thread asking for them in the title) for their thoughts...they are much more knowledgeable about this particular style cut then I am!!

EDIT: I just saw your post DS. I had the same though initially and then remembered a recent thread where I stated the exact same thing and John Pollard corrected me. Perhaps it wouldn't apply in this case but I was hesitant to say anything.

OP: If you really do prefer a stone with this type of LP I would definitely ask for Yssie or perhaps one of the resident experts because as I said, they are much more knowledgeable about it than I am!! I'll also try to find the thread that I referred to with DS.

Here is the thread I referenced, again it may or may not be relevant, the proportions are slightly different.

Oops! When I read this I thought that it sounded all wrong...as though I was excluding DS and others as being an 'expert' and that was NOT my intent. SUPER EMBARRASSED! Sorry!

I love those top two options, because they fit nicely in my budget. I don't really know much about fluorescence besides that it gives off a blue hue right? Does it take away from the "bright white" look? Maybe you could expand on how fluorescence effects the diamond?

You can read about fluorescence here, with some examples:
https://www.pricescope.com/wiki/diamonds/diamond-flourescence

But basically it adds a blue-ish hue to the diamond when exposed to light that has UV in it (blacklights at clubs, direct sunlight). They used to be quite expensive way back in the day, but they've been given a bad reputation for a milkiness rarely seen in strong blue fluorescence, so therefore they are usually cheaper. It also helps low colored diamonds look whiter (though not applicable in your case as JulieN suggested high color stones)

I think it's more of a personal preference. Some like it, some don't, and others couldn't care less. But they're nothing to fear, and definitely don't deserve the bad rap they've been given.
