Thoughts on this emerald ring?

Hi all! I know a lot about diamonds but am new to emeralds. I love the look of muzo emeralds I’ve seen. I love this particular setting, but don’t know much about certifications and sellers. Other recs for rings that look like this are welcome too!

Emeralds are notoriously hard to photograph. I'm no expert so take what I say with a grain of salt, but to me that ring seems expensive for the color and clarity and lack of GIA or similar certification. I am by no means saying this is the best one you could buy, but here is a much bigger 4.74 carat Colombian emerald with minor oil in a similar ring for $12k: https://alpinegreen.co/shop/bezel-set-east-west-ring-emerald-cut/

Yes thank you!! This is exactly the type of advice and setting I’m looking for.

I love the look and size of this particular stone and setting. Thoughts?

I looked at that one but to me the color didn't seem consistent through the emerald.

What do more knowledgeable people think of this one? https://jrcolombianemeralds.com/pro...bian-emerald-with-clipped-corners-emerald-cut

Or a little squarer and more expensive, this one, though maybe too much windowing: https://jrcolombianemeralds.com/pro...h-green-classic-colombian-emerald-emerald-cut

Edit: looking again, #2's window would probably drive me crazy. But again, others here know a lot more than I do.

I think David Klass would do a great version of that setting but obviously there are other jewelers as well.

I’m really liking that original one you recommended in the first post…I think for a middle finger ring that larger size could work. If anyone else has feedback on that particular one, that would be great!

So I would say the first stone you posted is the finest of the stones shared here. It is also Muzo origin, which carries a premium, and usually for good reason. Small, sometimes infinitesimal differences in quality can make a big difference in value. Other stones may be cleaner, but that color looks best, by far, to my eyes. I also think the cut is superior. My biggest issue is the certificate from Bellerophon. I am familiar with the lab from seeing it mentioned previously, but clarity enhancement levels can make a big impact on price. I would want a cert from a more trusted lab that confirm minor oil. That's just me. Good luck!

@Autumn in New England do you think OP's original ring find emerald is better than this one from JR? This is for my learning because to me it doesn't look better but I'm obviously not an expert, as mentioned many times!

Also I agree, I don't like that JR ring. Here are a couple of rings that are much more nicely done from CvB and David Klass along those lines, I would find a loose emerald and make a custom ring instead:

Yes, I would say the first stone is better in terms or color and cut (judging solely on the media provided). Granted, the video is under the worst possible lighting and looks horrid. The JR stone has better clarity, of course. It looks a little deeper in tone, bluer, and less vibrant. I would say it's likely Chivor as opposed to Muzo. :)

Thank you! To me the original looks better cut and the JR looks better in color but of course lighting like you said and maybe I just like deeper colors!

I really appreciate the explanation :)

It's so difficult to tell without seeing them together under the same conditions (or, better yet, in person). :geek2:

I’ve put in an offer on the first dibs ring. I saw a loose stone on the company’s direct site that looks great to me. Thoughts? If the complete ring doesn’t work out, I’d buy a loose stone and set it at myself. What do you experts think of this stone?

Knowing how badly emerald photographs/videos, this color looks fantastic! It's a little more included than I would prefer, but for this material, it's pretty darn good. There's maybe a miniscule window, which I wouldn't worry about. Clarity enhancement says minor. My only issue is that I'm not sure about the certifying lab (Bellerophon). I've heard of it, but never used them. For me personally, any purchase would be contingent upon recertification by GIA or AGL (if you're in the US).

Ok I’ll pursue that one! The company offers additional certs with a fee. I’ll inquire about that. Thanks!

If anyone is interested in a follow up, they sent a pic of the complete ring and a new video of the loose stone. I can’t attach the video here, but I think the choice is obvious. I love that loose stone in the video. Color is gorgeous and it’s very lively. 51a60b54-ea11-4168-9f26-87e1b8684da8.jpegIMG_9232.png

Loose stone all the way to these eyeballs!

The video is so nice and she swears it looks even better in person when it’s not through and iPhone camera! Thanks for the confidence to buy my first colored stone!

I hope you love it! Just be sure you have a return/refund policy, just in case. Congrats on your first CS!!
