Both are rounds:
Diamond 1
Carat Weight: 0.57
Color: N
Clarity: SI2
Dimensions: 5.02mm - 5.07mm x 3.40mm
Depth% / Table%: 67.78% / 63.88%
Crown ∠: 41.42°
Pavilion ∠: 42.71°

Diamond 2
Carat Weight: .59
Clarity: SI1
Color: O
Dimensions: 5.33 - 5.37 x 3.30mm
Depth% / Table%: 61.7% / 58.5%

I really have no understanding of most of this information. I tend to spend most of my time over on CS, but I'm on the hunt for a small and affordable birthday present for mom. Affordable is one of the key words, though I wish it didn't have to me. Can anyone point me to threads to understand table and depth percentages? Crown and pavilion angles?

I'd love to hear which one you'd pick! Thank you

Hi Indy

Definitely not the first one, do you have the angles for the second please? An O colour is going to be distinctly tinted, is that ok with you/ would it be ok with your Mom?

I can post some proportion guidelines for you if you want or you can use the HCA to see which score below 2 then concentrate on those. Also if you want, we can post some suitable stones for you if you give us your budget.

What do you want the diamond for? Depending, we can sometimes have more options with proportion sets if you want a pendant stone as a pose to a ring.

ditto.

really weird proportions for the #1 stone, you sure you got them posted correctly?

What kind of budget are you working with?

Hi Lorelei and SC!

Here's the link to the first diamond link to GOG

My budget is under $450. I know that that's basically zilch in the diamond world. At this point, its a battle between size and specs...while an O color is not 'ideal', it allows me to have a 5mm diamond. While size isn't everything, between 3-4mm would be harder to set (5mm is an easy calibrated size since I'm working on a budget ) and also be easy to "get lost" on her. I love small, dainty stones, but I think she'd rather give a little color for a little size.

Not really my place, and an O would make me drool, but I'll be honest, not for my first E-ring.. there's no hiding the colour in an N or an O, perhaps you want to make sure she's completely okay with it?

so the 450 is the entire budget or just for the stone?

$450 for the stone.

Yssie, I love lower colors too! Its just a birthday pressie, not an e-ring.

Oh, in that case start the salivation

ETA: I just reread your first post - I must've been reading with a blindfold on first time round!

Blue flour. should ''whiten'' an L somewhat, right?

I''m leaning towards using this as a right hand ring for mom.

I got to see an M w/ vsb fluor in person the other weekend

it was the strangest diamond - like a chameleon stone! In the sunlight it looked really blue, in any other light it looked visibly tinted, like toast. Very cool diamond! Didn't ever look "white" though - just blue or toasty

yap, not really whitening a stone unless in the presence of UV source, so do not expect it to be so.

Hmmn, that is really interesting Yssie! Lovingdiamonds has started a thread on florescence over on CS and has some pretty interesting shots up, including a red irradiated diamond with multicolour flour.

SC, thank you for the clarification!

You should have a setting made. I think it would be a nice touch and also make the size blend in since you are concerned about size. I wish these settings would make a comeback. I''m pretty sure there are vendors here that could make it (GOG?). It would also add a personal touch to a birthday present.

I also think you should consider other stones. I''d get something slightly smaller that performs better. The better light performance and illusion setting will give a much better appearance. Here''s a stone under $500, if you''re not dead set on the round brilliant:

I don''t know. I''m just throwing out ideas but I think in this budget you can still get something awesome, but it will require creativity and innovation. I''d go for ideal light performance and an enhancing setting with your budget, if I were concerned about size.

You could set that stone on the diagonal in such a setting, possibly, and add some prongs.

I made a picture and set the stone on the diagonal (don''t know if you can tell). Anyway, that''s what I would do given your budget and size concern. What is your setting budget?

It can help in some lightings possibly but you would really need at least medium and preferably strong to make any difference.
