this one is ok, A bit mushier in the middle than i like but not terrible....

this would be my pick. nice size, beautiful sharp facets. Also an I but with this cut all you will see is sparkle.

If you want bright white and are open to more antique stones, this one has potential- some of the facets are not as sharp so you can ask James Allen for an ASET to help tell if this will be bright or possibly leaky. I am one of the few who can only make a decision when i see something with my own eyes, regardless of what an imaging report says- but for many this is an extremely helpful tool. Personally i love this look and think it could be stunning in a halo. Again, very subjective as it's a very different style.

Is the 30K for stone alone or stone and setting?

Thanks for the help. The second one looks really nice!! I guess I was looking for the largest stone I can get with good eye appeal. My budget is 30K for the stone alone. I think the second one would look great but is there a big difference from 2.5-3.0 on the finger? I would say she is a 4.5-5 ring size with long fingers.

Thanks!

on cushions you must look at the dimensions, not the carat. That said, here is a handy little image from a website (that for some reason is blocked on PS, so weird) that shows what these sizes would look like on a size 4.75 finger

the 3.04
8.37*8.29*5.77

the 2.5
7.85*7.65*5.32

there is going to be a fair size difference between these two stones for sure.

If you like the look of the antique stone there are some sellers who specialize in these types of stones cut for ideal light return. There are also true antique cushions you could at look at. Cushions are amazing because there are honestly so many different types. Before you make a decision browse pricescope, here is a great thread on cushions to peruse at your leisure:

here is a thread on one of those branded antique style stones, which you could def afford in your price range though probably not a 3 carat (They are priced quite a bit higher than regular cushions). These have a very different look and feel that many people love.

Also just so you have a frame of reference, i myself have a cushion stone in a thin halo. I have a size 4.75 finger (my ring is a 5.25 though because its an eternity band ) and it faces up larger than that 2.5 i posted above. If you look at my old thread you can see real life pics of a stone in the size range you are looking for on the finger. It is only a 2 carat but faces up huge!

forgot to ask- are you only looking for square or are you open to rectangular as well?

Wow thank you for all of the help guys! The 8 main stone looks very nice, I'm going to chat with them about it.

What would look better from across the room one of the vintage cuts or something like the 8 main stone listed?

After looking through some of the pics this mount is really nice and elegant

I'm set on the square cushion and not an oval.

I haven't shopped or really looked at diamonds in a very long time (before you could buy one on the web easily) It's amazing how educated one can become now.

Again thank you for all of your help. I am on other forums and have not see this much help for many moons.

Regarding "Which will look better across a room" they are two VERY different style. The 8 main cushion in a very square shape can almost look like a squared off round sometimes. Lots of smaller flashes, but not chaotic. The antique style will have big pastel flashes. It is very much a matter of taste. Many people are not familiar with the antique style cushions so it's kind of like "WHOA! WHATS THIS?!?!?!". A modern style is more common, but again even within modern there is a ton of different style types. When i was cushion hunting i found looking at all the different types in person (crushed ice, 4 main, 8 main, antique, etc etc) an invaluable exercise.

Have you snooped on your SO's pinterest? Does she have friends you can ask? How do you know this is what she wants?

Edit to add- for a setting like the one above you are going to need to budget about 3000 for a nicely done CAD design, and closer to 5k for a hand made setting. If you love the entire look of the ring you posted (Charmypoo's) then the 8 main is the way to go. Here is a link to someones rings that is extremely similar with the august vintage cushion (the antique style cushion)

We were browsing in Tiffany's at rings and was asking her what ones she liked etc. (personally I'm a fancy canary yellow fan) She was really drawn to the cushion halos and princess halos. I'll take her out and browse again. I looked at Pinterest and there is not much there she is not a big "this is the ring I want" more of anything would be good.

I really like the vintage cuts, what about wearability with a stone sticking out like that can one wear it day to day? If we decide to upgrade I would imagine the vintage you would take a bigger hit on resell/trade-in or are they widely accepted as more expensive?

The vintage reminds me of mine cut diamonds (which 30 years ago you had to discount to sell lol)
