Thoughts on this 3 carat yellow square emerald?

I recently made a ring with a 3 carat Asscher lab diamond. I wasn’t happy with the overall look of the Asscher once it was bezeled. I decided to switch gears and look for a colored stone. My jeweler was lucky enough to be able to pop the diamond out and remove it from underneath without dismantling the ring or disturbing the bezel. I am very limited on what will fit. I could only find one yellow sapphire that is almost a perfect fit that seems to meet the requirements I had for color and size.

The stock pictures showed something more canary yellow and it was a bit more golden then what the pictures showed. I am happy with the color when daylight. It is a little concerning when it goes deep golden or has dark steps. Maybe this is normal for any type of stepcut? I just don’t want to make another mistake again with the wrong gem and I am curious on how much it will change color in a bezel? I am hoping to keep that lemon yellow color.

Here is the GIA cert:

My jeweler has the setting but it fits in the plastic model perfectly.

I love the yellow color of the stone in daylight. I am just worried about it going dark or more golden in a bezel ring. I am not sure what is normal and I don’t want to make a second mistake. Thought’s on this stone?

I find yellow sapphires to be very capricious. The issue isn’t actually the colour - even quite vivid lemony stones can look underwhelming depending on the angle of the light. I have a 6ct unheated emerald cut which is absolutely clean but when I look at it face up in shade it just seems to sit there gloomily refusing to dazzle me.

They just don’t have the sparkle of a diamond (low refractive index in comparison) so the light return, especially in a step cut is not flashy. They also look very dull when they aren’t absolutely pristine clean. I clean mine after every wear.

I think the colour of this is damn nice. But you might find it hard to keep clean enough to wow in that bezel. Having said that, you do get a lovely “glow” when they are set that way.

Overall, I don’t think the issue will be THAT particular stone - either colour or cut - because the stone itself is lovely. It’s whether you’re happy with the vagaries of how sapphires shift and the lack of “sparkle”.

I think it looks lovely and quite brilliant face-on. The color seems to work nicely with the cut -- much more appealing to my eye than an oval or cushion. I really can't say why, though.

Still looks brilliant in the wax.

I am curious how you/vendor managed to take that one blacked-out fish-eye-looking photo. I would not have expected that appearance give the brilliance in the video and other photos.

I think it depends on the cut. I have a round brilliant cut yellow sapphire and it still sparkles like a disco ball even under the table.

It looks beautiful to me but I expect that in some lighting every gem or diamond will not look its best. Do you think it will look pleasing to you the majority of the time you wear it?

Possibly due to the phone case? I’ve a black phone case and it does that to my yellow sapphire - used to give me mini heart attacks until I realized why.

I think it will be nice in the setting but sapphire isn’t bling bling like diamond so you have to be able to accept the trade-off.

So here is the sapphire sitting in the setting from the top and not from underneath. I knew that the measurements were off by just a tiny bit. The diamond was 8.06 x 7.79x 4.67 mm. The sapphire is 8.03 x 7.94 x 5.04 mm.

It is really close but I wanted the long part of the culet set N/S and in the GIA picture, is is shown as E/W so I am not quite sure if it will fit in the way I want. Sam was going to try to polish out the miligrain and see if they can plate the cup yellow to see how it changes the color for better or worse. He thinks there is a bit of a window and the cup will help with that. He thought the gem was a quite a nice color.

The yellow isn’t going too dark in these pictures and he took them in natural light and near a window. I will know by Wednesday if they can make it fit.

I don’t expect a lot of sparkle from the sapphire. I just want a nice color and some contrast. The lab diamond blended in too much.

To my eye, the faceting of the step cut makes it look like the orientation of the sapphire should be changed. But perhaps it's just an artifact of the photo.

Yes, that is correct. The jeweler was just trying to get it to sit flat in the setting for the pic. The problem with the opposite orientation is that the stone is even more off then. Of course it had to be that way! Let’s hope he can work his magic and make it look seamless. I am hoping that the miligrain edge will cover up any imperfection’s. At this point, I am surprised I have even gotten this far. Trying to reset a bezel with another stone when it is not a round & 3 carat’s is very, very hard!

I bet it is hard! Getting one cut might be an option if this doesn’t work out. But that’s another can of worms. If anyone can work magic it’s Sam though!!

I received the sapphire ring! It made such a difference switching this from an Asscher lab diamond. The color really pops and I am pleased with how yellow it looks a majority of the time. The sun was starting to set when I was able to take a few pics and video’s but I will try some outside tomorrow.

This is a GIA 3.04 unheated yellow sapphire in a platinum setting made by Sam at Debebian’s. I wanted to make sure there was enough diamond sparkle from all sides so I added a 6 marquise diamond petal’s to form a flower from underneath. A cup was added underneath the center stone that was 18K gold plated to bring out the color.

Gorgeous! This is the first time I'm seeing this thread, but I'm glad that you went for the yellow sapphire. It's not as sparkly as a diamond, but the lovely contrast and pop of color was more what you were going for, I think. Congratulations and enjoy!
