My jeweler obviously wants to make a buck so I'm taking what he says with a grain of salt and want to get the opinion of some of you fine people!

I have a princess cut 5.66 x 5.58, G, VVS2, 1.20, table 68%, no flr, $5k. I had someone (recommended on here and 40+yrs of experience) appraise it and he said the cut looks good. In fact he said I did a great job for the price I paid. My main concern was it wasn't catching light well. When I inspect it I think it looks great and my appraisal guy corroborated that as well.

The jeweler says the girdle is too thick and the dimensions look more like a ct that is closer to 1ct. While I did find some wider 1ct diamonds, they were also the same price as what I paid. He is saying he has a 5.80x5.82 1ct for about $6k, but I don't really want to pay 20% more for a 6.8% increase in top surface area. Also, his is VS1 and mine is VVS2.

Anyways, I think I should stick with what I have. Can I get your thoughts though?

I'm confused...you think it looks great but it's not returning light well? Does that mean its not sparkly or putting off fire?

So, if you think it is great then why get a new stone (you will probably lose money in the process)?

However, your jeweler does make some points about it having a thick girdle and not facing up as big as it should for its weight.
(but if you think it looks great then not a big deal right?)

I also see some flashing lights in some of the comments your appraiser has made. The cut looks good...good doesnt mean Excellent
or Ideal (which you'll find in really well cut stones) and good job for the price...is code for something had to give (probably cut).

A 1 carat at 5.8mm is facing up too big which means it is probably a shallow stone. A shallow stone will not have good light return
either.

Here is a really nice cut stone (Ideal cut...AGS000) for you to see. This is the kind of light return you should be looking for.
Do you have an aset image for your stone or the other stone that your jeweler is offering you?

Thanks for the reply. The appraisal guy said it looked really good and had great sparkle. I can't remember the exact words, but he did seem to really like it and said "wow" a few times. I should clear up that I bought the stone online so I wanted a 2nd opinion and brought it to an appraisal guy. The jeweler I assume wants me to buy his stones instead.

It does sparkle well and I specifically asked the appraisal guy about it dropping light as a concern some others expressed online (not here). Appraiser said it's great....i guess i'm just 2nd guessing myself :errrr: as i want to make sure i'm maximizing my dollar. I'm just gonna stick with it though!

Thank you tyty333 for the reply and everyone else on this board that i've been reading posts from. Really helpful site!
