Hi,

I am in the process of upgrading my engagement/wedding rings and would like to hear some thoughts on this diamond:

https://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/diamond-details/LD06936966

(I hope the link works, I have never posted on here before and am unfamiliar with trying to do a hyperlink on my phone!)

My current rings are from Blue Nile, so they are being exchanged through BN. I have actually already ordered a ring for the exchange, which has an I color, IF 1.2 carat emerald cut in a platinum cathedral setting with pavé and milgrain, but I can't stop thinking about getting this asscher in either a yellow gold or platinum solitaire setting.

I am interested in opinions from the PS community! I can attach screen shots of the I/IF emerald cut and setting that I chose, if anyone is interested in making a comparison between the two diamonds.

Thank you!

Is that price real?!? I have a blue Nile 1.52 g VS1 and it was $11,500ish

Ok, so the link just takes you to the BN website. I am not sure how to fix that! Here are the specs:

I know! That is why I can't stop thinking about it! I think it looks pretty good. I am thinking of calling and seeing if I can do a switcheroo last minute, but I might have to wait for my other ring to be completed than do a return/exchange.

You have to copy and paste blue Nile
Links. It's a pretty stone-- I'm not sure how much body color a J would show though...

I wonder if diamond prices dropped? Mine is very good cut as well.

Videos are sometimes hard to judge by because of the angle the diamond is resting at, but other than some warmth I can see in the reflections it looks like a beautiful stone (and a fantastic price). I'd say that if it's constantly on your mind you definitely should look in to it more or you'll always regret it.

Thanks for your responses! I definitely don't mind a little warmth, especially if it makes the diamond look more like a creamy ivory or off white.

Can you buy both stones and send one back?

Unfortunately, that isn't really an option right now . I called BN and had them put the asscher on hold for me for a couple of days. It isn't too late for me to change my ring if I decide to do so, I just need to let them know by Sunday night.

Here is the link for the emerald cut if anyone is interested:

For me, it's no contest. That asscher would win hands down. Again, videos can make it hard to choose but there appears to be a very prominent bow tie in that emerald; what we don't know is how well those facets "wink".

But, I'm biased. While I love emerald cuts I realized I couldn't deal with a large part of my stone always being black (bow tie) so I chose an asscher :)

That is what I thought, but the Blue Nile associate in the showroom said that it was just from the lighting! I went in there wanting to get the asscher and the two sales associates talked me out of it because of the J color.

Would you set the asscher in yellow gold or platinum? I love both. My current setting is white gold but it doesn't agree with me, which is why we are doing the upgrade.

Once upon a long time ago, I had a J asscher. Loved it! Here is a post I made years ago about it, I set it in white gold head, and i then reset it in all platinum... I would definitely set it in Platinum, because its not warm enough to accentuate the "yellowish color" and it may look more dingy... if you do Yellow gold you may have a more warm ivory color... it really depends on your preference. If you want to make it look a bit whiter... then definitely a white/platinum head.

I would get the asscher hands down - it's lovely and if the J colour doesn't bother you, it looks like a winner. My sister has an E asscher in a 18k YG split shank setting and it absolutely pops in the rich gold so I'd vote for that too. If you don't like WG, platinum is likely to be a problem too.
How do you want to set it?

You guys have sold me on it, I am going to switch to the asscher. I think I knew it all along, I just needed a little reassurance from people who are more experienced with diamonds than I am.

I really just want a plain solitaire setting. I have been leaning towards yellow gold, but am considering platinum as well.

Your ring is one that I have admired from afar . It definitely contributed to my love of asschers.

They are Gorgeous when you find the right one! This one seems like its calling to you and it looks amazing! Congrats on your decision. I've been through many many many (too many diamonds) and Asschers are top on my list...still... I do love step cut :)

I just wanted to add that I checked the face up size, and the asscher is only 1% larger in area than the emerald cut. So you are not gaining visual size. But I do love asschers and think that it looks like a nice one! The emerald cut has the advantage of being a color grade higher, but it' a little hard to evaluate an emerald cut without seeing it in person.

Here is a relative size difference between the 2 stones...the asscher looks very pretty but like DS said above dont expect it to be a lot larger.
It is a different shape though and if you like the look of an asscher it looks like a nice one (IMO).

Yes, that is something I took into consideration. I even have that same website bookmarked . But I appreciate the input! I think it is more the shape of the asscher that is calling to me.

Given that it's a J, I'd probably do a platinum head (to help with whiteness) and yellow gold band. I know you want a solitaire, but do you want a plain solitaire or something with some flare? I ask because I think something with even a bit of extra on it would compliment the vintage appeal of an asscher. Here's an example from BN that would probably look amazing - https://www.bluenile.com/build-your...old_44707?elem=img&track=product&vtype=sample

If possible, I'd ask them to make the prongs delicate and more claw-like than round and bulbous and to set the stone as low as possible; on the website, they have a pretty high head on the ring.

I have a K antique asscher in all platinum, I forgot to say that earlier. So you can set it in any metal you like!

That setting is pretty! I like the detail. I do prefer thinner prongs, as you suggested.
