THOUGHTS ON DIAMOND AND STETTING HALO ....HELP

hello im a first time poster but long time browser /reader
thought would be perfect place to get some info and answers
so lets get to it
i recently purchased a ring its a princess cut 1.05 ct /was told it was a h-i in color and si-si2 clarity
now the clarity seems to be right
but for the color it appears to have more yellows tint then a h or i should i have although this is my first in h or i color always had g and up just seems to drastic to be a h or i
it also could be due to the photos not being the best and wont be able to tell 100% till i receive it (couple days)
and its a solitaire and wanted to have it reset in a halo setting was thinking it would cover the sides and give it more of a whiter look
also this is not a traditional engagement ring its just something im getting her for our puppies engagement
(shes had for yr, though then i suppose not a puppy anymore.. lol)ya were weird like that

ummmm that is definitely not an H. Did this even come with a lab report or someone just told you H? I would return asap and then run very fast and far from your vendor/ jewelry. I don't even want to know how much you paid.

Go to the search diamond tool and put in yoru stats. Find a better diamond through a trusted vendor and only look at diamonds with GIA/ AGS certs.

Ya that's what I thought .. Only reason why makes me think might be photos thinking flash maybe is because I have bought from before and never had problem all was accurate but just shocked me how yellow it looked and prices wasn't bad if it was a h or somewhat close to it ..but when it comes and if its that yellow its a def return no question I'm not into yellow or fancy colors so I wouldn't even pay few hundred for that I wasn't expecting the best but just looked bad .. Was thinking maybe if set right try to mask it a little but if its that bad I don't think it can be saved

Yes, I agree that it is not an H - from the images, it appears far from it actually.

It could be a badly graded EGL International H or I which means by GIA standards its closer to an L or an M or lower in colour. Anyway I agree with everyone else there is no way in Hades that is a H.

budget wasnt really a factor more spur of the moment saw a good deal.. went for it
now seeing, might not be such a good deal..
but should have in a couple days so we ll see... not so hopeful any more though

Looking at the photo it looks like a Q/R, U/V color diamond with brown hue (at least to my eyes). They are pretty inexpensive, but pretty. Just so you realized your vendro sold you a diamond that was probably at least 8 color grades off.

ok so ring came in and have to say the photos def made it look more yellow then it actually is
i still dont belive its a h but the yellow is not as strong ill try and take some photos today

Putting the issue of colour to one side (and it still looks a number of grades below what GIA would call "H")...

The cut and clarity on that diamond look extremely sub-optimal. Although diamonds do not photo easily and some of those photos are blurred, I notice that the vendor had described the item as an SI2 in clarity. If they described it as a H colour and it looks as yellow as it does, I would also be very worried about the clarity being akin to I1 or even I2. I am not seeing any fire or distinctive facet pattern on that stone.

As for your main question - whether or not a halo reset will save the day - it will make the stone look even worse. Even if you used pointers which were roughly GIA H-I colour, the border of white sparkle will only serve to emphasis how un-white the centre stone is.

I would try to return that stone/ring asap.

Also, a number of photos seem to show that there is a window/bow tie spot which seems to run from East to West through near the centre of the stone (almost following the line of the band, but just a bit off), where no light is being reflected.

The two potential issues you face are either:
- you have paid a fair "bairgain" price for this stone/ring, but from an aethetic point of view it just doesn't look that nice at all, and you could and should have probably got something with a decent cut/colour/clarity (albeit lesser carat) for your money; or
- you have paid well over the odds for something which is actually worth even less than you paid for it.

Out of interest, how much did you pay for this?

i dont want to put prices up and get baned seen someone say something like that before..
but if you could goin by what you think of the stone what a estimate range would ber to pay for such a ring
and ill tell you if im in it

that said i mean the diamond does sparkle and has fire
is it the best or most ..no not all but kinda new that ..and to mee the diamond appears eye clean
again that said i think clarity has been soft graded and color def was
and agree that its probable a color off wold say maybe even j k range??but dont have one to compare to see
clarity probably would be a i1 but because it look eye clean said it was si2 i think some even do si3
im not a diamond expert or anything

to me even though it was marked as h and si2 and is lower
i feel i paid the price of what it would be if it was graded lower
just that it made it seem like a better deal t call hsi2

still not good practice but it is what it is i guess
and i kinda have the same feeling on the halo i was thinking if the halo was in rose gold and rest white gold and have it 2 tone the contrast would trick the eyes a little better

People often use rose gold halos (and cups) to emphasise the non-white colour of a coloured centrestone (particularly with, say, pink diamonds). If your centrestone has the brown tinges which some have picked up on, rose gold won't do any favours.

With regards to clarity, SI3 is used by some graders (e.g. EGL), but not GIA or AGS. Anything which is less than a GIA/AGS SI2 will be I1 or below. So anyone calling something SI3 is probably going to be akin to a GIA I1, at best I'd say.

Clarity doesn't have to be black pinpoints of feathers - remember it could be a cloud which an untrained eye might not recognise so easily - it would just make the stone look a bit more lifeless/dull.

Also, it's not clear whether your stone has fluorescence. If so, that can bring the value down and in some cases cause haziness/milky cloudiness.

I'd imagine a fair price to pay for such a stone as yours (ungraded H SI2 1.04ct) would be around $2,800-$3,000 tops. Here are some stones which are graded I colour and I1 clarity by GIA/AGS at such prices:

This doesn't mean that buying your ring for, say, shy of $2,200 counts as a bargain, because for that price you probably have got something just under a carat but with supreme cut, respectable colour and clarity.

Honestly it is just not a very pretty diamond. If you paid over $800 I wouldn't consider it. Sorry to be harsh but between the cut, brown hue and the fact that it is way way way below an H in brings the price way down. You can go on ebay and buy something much much much nicer for a bargin.

If your goal is to "get a deal" you've very likely not accomplished that. People are trying to tell you that diamond doesn't look anything like an H and the overall appearance is not super fabulous. If you are looking for a deal and you want someone on ths board to tell you it's fabulous... Most of the regulars here who know a little bit and more are not going to tell you it's a deal or it looks fabulous.

Bottom line... If you are happy and your girl is happy then be happy. But getting feedback that says what you want to hear will not happen with those photographs.

My suggestion.... Get out and do some comparison shopping... Also prices an ranges are on a multitude of posts all over this forum. Posting your budget is normal so people can actually help you by providing you options in your price range.

overall i paid under 7 for it
and im not looking for compliments on the photos just showing
and as in deal i no its not the best new that getting it you get what you pay for
wasnt expecting to get a 5000$ diamond
the way i seen it was for a little over a 1 ct for the price was a deal even tho its not great or worth alot
ive seen worst then what i received go for more so in that sense i fig i got a deal
to me with cheap diamonds key factors are face up white, eye clean, and sparkle
now it does face up white for most part has a tint and some angles can see color more
clarity pretty much eye clean without a hard inspection of it
and it does have ok sparkle
now this is probably on the lowest scale diamond ive bought but for the price not as bad as i thought it would be
if this thing was side by side with beter diamond would put it to shame

and if this was a engagement or something like that wouldn't touch it

but for in the 500-700 range 1ct..dont think its bad iv spent 2-3k on less ..but obv blow this away in comparison

It sounds like you are prioritizing your budget and there is nothing wrong with that. You paid 700 for the stone and you like the size but now you will spend more money on the setting. Have you considered going down in size and buying a preowned halo ring that is already set? Something like this? .65 carat
