i am curious what everyone thinks about horizontally set stones. I am looking at an elongated cushion and am thinking about doing a kate beckinsale-like setting. danica patrick also wears a gorgeous horizontally set emerald cut. opinions, please :)

We call them east/west set center stones.

And I think they are lovely. But I was very dismayed to find they looked horrible on my fingers. So... I think that if they look good on your hands (check), then they are great. If they are not flattering to your hands, I would avoid.

Use the search function at the top of the screen and search for 'east west' and you'll see a lot of options in different cuts. If you want cushions only search 'east west cushion".

thank you gypsy :) i am searching as we speak...

My oval e-ring is set that way, I love it. Make sure to try some on and see if they look good on your hand too.

Major fan here! My EC is set e-w in a bezel. I love it and am so glad I set it that way.

I'm a big fan too! I think that they look larger set east/west as well (bonus!!), but I agree with the others that you should try some on before you commit, I think that they tend to look better on people with long slim fingers...which leaves me out. :((

Love it. Though I find it most attractive when its distinct. A slight rectangular cushion, I would hardly notice and might come off as unintentional. Like, does she know that's off? But one that's a longer ratio closer to 2:1 instead of 1:1.... now those look intentional and beautiful. Woofmamas is a nice example of it being rectangular enough to look nice.

I just think if you do it you really have to commit or it doesnt come off as high end.

Love it. I think that smaller stones look larger when set EW. That said, not everyone can pull off this look. I find that I can wear large EW stones but small EW stones make my short fingers look even shorter.

I also love it. And if you want to reset to N/S in the future, it will feel so different it is almost like getting a new stone (although I would imagine you'd miss the E/W finger coverage so much you'd need side stones to compensate). It's a very elegant option if done well.

thanks everyone for your input. i am looking at a 9.63 x 6.53 mm stone. I am worried that if I don't set it E/W it will look too skinny and narrow. I'm petite and my ring finger is a 4.5. Any one have any pics of ideas?

Do you have a picture of the stone??

Double post.

I am currently setting a 10 x 8 mm oval EW on a size 4.5 finger. Place the stone EW on your finger to see if this look compliments your hand.

Gorgeous stone. I think in a setting like Kate Beckinsale's, it would be stunning. I have an antique cushion sapphire I eventually want to have set east-west. I think it's a classy look.

Christina.... THANKS!! My bf and I have been searching for a month or so, and he is becoming a real diamond expert. It is making the search so much fun :twirl:

We are getting the stone in the next day or so, so I will post pics when I have it!!

I love east-west set rings!!! They are unique and totally classy! =)

=) I'm going to hold you to it! I'll be watching your progress with much interest!! Will Leon be designing the setting or do you have something or someone else in mind?

Is it just me or does the stone look flattish (low crown and overall depth)? Is it because of the ratio being very elongated?

Nope it's not just you, The depth % is lower than average. I actually asked perry (of leon mege) that very question because I wanted to make sure it wouldn't affect the stone's brilliance and sparkle. He assured me that usually depth would affect it, but he showed the stone to leon and they both agreed it was magnificent. I do have a 5 day return policy though, just I'm case ;) hopefully getting it in today, wish me luck!

UPDATE!! So I got the stone on thursday, and unfortunately, it was just wayyyy too shallow. I don't know if it was the 1.50 l/w ratio and the fact that it was so shallow, but it was definitely not as gorgeous of a stone as it appeared in the video. It's on its way back to NY as we speak...Back to the drawing board!!

oh no! im sorry to hear that! Let me ask you, would you be happier with a cut that lends itself more to longer ratios? like an oval or a marquise? Those make stunning E/W designs too

Awww! I'm so sorry Holly, I know how frustrating it is to think that you 've found just exactly what you wanted only to find out...you didn't. *hugs* I think that you made the right choice, if you aren't 100% happy then you need to move on. Are you going to continue to work with Perry for your stone or have you decided to broaden your search base?

Love the east-west design... Kate Beckinsale's ring is probably my fav celebrity ring!
